Got my X5 back this afternoon with its new right front BMW wheel bearing. I can't believe how much quieter it rides. Couldn't be happier with the turnaround time and reasonable cost ($395+tax as quoted with BMW bearing). Hub was fine. I'm really glad I took it in and found this shop (Amity Motors in Woodbridge, CT for those in the area).

As I could have predicted from some of the comments in this thread, I asked the tech how it went he just said "Well, it wasn't fun." On that note, I may leave future wheel bearing replacements to the professionals. Thanks to all for the feedback.

Good to hear you scored both great service and price; $395 is a very good deal. The mech shop I took my hubs to mentioned how tough it was pressing out/in the bearing. There's also a big narly circlip.

Honestly thats a great indy and a great price - considering the BMW bearing costs $90 plus the circlip $7 I'm sure it took him a few hours - real good shop to do it for that price and I'm in full agreement it is NOT fun especially that huge circlip

Anyone put off with doing a DIY that involves large circlips needs these.

https://www.zoro.com/channellock-ret...w&gclsrc=aw.ds

$20, and makes removal/install a breeze.

The description states these are for bore diameters up to 2", WAY off. These spread to 1 3/8", will work on clips over 4" diameter!

Hey that's the same pair of piler that I use for removing large circlips. Like my dad always told me, get the right tool and the job is a lot easier.

No doubt, the right tool makes the difficult easy.

I like this tool because it has a reverse lever, the same tool removes/installs ID & OD clips.

Is that the same C clip that I will run into doing the " 30 minute" cv boot job?

Nope. This is the C-clip that retains the bearing in the housing.

The c-clip for the CV boot repair is located on the half shaft spline ends that goes into the CV joint.

Thank for letting me know. I am still bracing to try this. I swapped a radiator on my e46 figuring it would only take 4 hours. Well I am new and 4 hours turned into 20 since I broke a few things. Either way, 300.00 for a new rad, hoses, and a few other parts beats 520.00 from an indy. Plus I have the know how, which is what I wanted anyway.

Speaking of tools, if you are going to remove the CV joint from the half shaft there's a special tool that makes it easy. Tool can be purchase on eBay, maybe Amazon.

Here's a video of the tool in action. You don't need to pull the driveshaft out of the diff and don't need to get a BFH to beat the cv joint off the half shaft.
