I'm right at 100K miles.
Bought the part on Amazon. Very easy to do. Mine had very little wear on it. I did it for prevention. I think my original would have lasted another 300K miles.

Good call, preventative is the way to go. Why wait for it to fail!

So is this only applicable to the facelift xDrive X5's?

Richardb,
This is a great DIY! So easy, even a caveman could do it! IMHO, a great low cost preventative component that I will replace to avoid an inopportune failure of the AWD system. I'm planning to continue having X-periences beyond my current 95K miles and things like these are an easy decision for me. Buying this one right now and will change it at my convenience. Had I known about this when I did the xfer case, tranny and diff fluids I would have changed it then. Yes, only applicable to the xDrive system on facelift (LCI) models.
The older models use a transfer case (NV125) with no xDrive system and no motor - it has a fixed torque split. The LCI models with xDrive use a transfer case (ATC500) that has a variable torque split.

Yes, now I recall the 62/38 (or some such numbers) F/T AWD torque split. One less thing to worry about with a pre-facelift X. Mike
