I just flipped mine. It’s been like 5 - 6 years now with no issues.

I just did and the stupid classification resistor (which was causing a trifecta without going into safe mode)

I had attempted it, but couldn't get that darn plate off no matter what I had tried. Gave up and just turned the gear toward the less worn part. So far so good in about 2 years.

Here's my gear after 171,000 miles:
Name: E53-actuator-31122018.jpg
Views: 568
Size: 181.2 KB

The warning signs were a little rough acceleration, at all speeds; better fuel mileage and finally the three warning lights which appeared when accelerating hard on a wet road.

I got the actuator out without jacking the car, it's an easy job. Once I added Torx sockets to the never-ending toolkit, anyway.

That’s really good condition. Mine was chewed up to the point the surface became smooth. I was at like 70-80k miles back then. But technically my gear is still in there, just flipped.

Great info. My late 2005 model has these exact symptoms and has done 198000 k’s. Local wrecker said it is common and quoted me $1150 AUD. I thought to check this forum and was pleased to see this cheap and simple fix.
I have ordered this composit gear although it won’t arrive for a few weeks. Question is what does this gear and actuator do and will it damage anything driving it and particularly towing in the meantime.

You might want to spin the gear over 180Deg. to keep you going in the meantime, although I doubt driving it a little with the DSC in "grumpy" mode will hurt anything. A few weeks and towing might be a bit much though...
