Im pretty sure its not the valve seals as that would not get iol into the inlet manifold (it would just go straight into the combustion chamber).
Test it and see what happens.

Update on this - im prettuy sure it is stem seals even thoug hte breather system was poor too.

Ive got strong vacuum at the oil filler cap, inlet pipes, crank vent pipes etc and opening any of those areas when running causes a large change in idle speed and note for a second.

Time to get the covers off and order some tools from AGA !

The thing is if You have SLUDGE through out the system, the valve stem seals are shot, open your oil fill cap and that a look inside ,also smell , if You see sludge or smell it then You have to do a bunch of oil changes with good Castrol extended performance and a good BMW filter too., it is expensive.
I saved my 4.8is engine when I bought her with 65k on the engine and cleaned the whole system and change oil every 4k miles.
Good Luck with her.

Certainly no sludge from what I have seen so far and full service history (at the BMW intervals ).

A slight ticking from the front of the engine is the only noticible noise, sight or smell of unything wrong under the bonnet

Covers came off today - what a nightmare to squeeze them out !. Bet its even worse getting them back in !

Pulled all the plugs and number 3 on bank 1 is the only darkish one whice does link to my right hand exhaust pipe being darker.

Also the rear inlet vales look interesting to access - I assume you cannot remove the valvetronic setup easily

Is there anything else worth replacing while im in there ?

Spark plug tubes etc ?

Also I had this pop up on my ebay reccomended items - a cam locking kit for the N62 for £40 ($50). Every other one ive seen is more like £200 ($250) so is it worth getting at that price so I can do the valve seals easier and also other parts in the future (chains, tensioners etc) ?

Also I did have a very slight tapping at startup that sounded like a tappet but im paranoid its vanos or chain guides now - any way to check these things ?
