Because I literally just went through this. Hook it up to an actual diagnostic program and it'll tell you that you're running lean. For whatever reason Torque pro gave me those codes saying that I was running rich, hooked it up to INPA and it told me I was running lean which was verified by logs. Get obdfusion. It's much faster than torque pro and allows for better diagnostics.

What did I just say? I verified that I was in fact running lean with the logs (you know, the collection of real time data?) from the OBDfusion app.

Confused as to why you read the trouble code with Torque Pro, but used OBD Fusion to read the log, Wouldn't it had been easier to read the freeze frame or real time with Torque Pro after you read the trouble code.

If you didn't think Torque Pro is accurate why did you use it in the first place, since you have access to OBD Fusion and INPA?

Sorry, I was thinking Carly BMW. And honestly, unless you have an F chassis BMW... Carly isn't that great.
Torque Pro was much cheaper, used to use it on my Avin Avant in the old X.

I read the initial code with Torque while I was out driving around. Got home, scanned with INPA for more information (found out Torque was wrong). I needed something that could log real time data from multiple parameters at the same time and Torque fit that bill. I need logs, I can't look at the real time data only as I am driving. Then I downloaded OBDfusion. With OBDfusion I can select a plethora or parameters that'll be measured, logged, and exported straight to my Dropbox in an easy to read spreadsheet format. Torque doesn't do that. I don't know why you are so hung up on it. OBDfusion does everything Torque does but better for the same or similar price. FWIW I don't know if OBDfusion gave the same rich code as I did not check while logging.

I use whatever software that can help me troubleshoot my BMW. Both Torque and OBD Fusion uses the same PIDs that the car computer spits out so the result should be the same. They must use the PIDs that conform with the OBD II protocol.

So after some further investigation, I had cracks in my lower intake boot. Specifically the branch that goes up to the ICV. Getting to the boot clamp at the throttle body was tricky. I had to remove the DISA valve (easy enough) which gave me access to the clamp at the ICV first. I ended up cutting that branch of the boot off and got visibility to the larger clamp at the throttle body -- With the help of a 6mm ratcheting wrench, I was able to get it off.
I cleaned the throttle body best I could in-place and removed the ICV and cleaned that thoroughly as it was pretty gummy. I've driven a few hundred miles so far and no SES! I got it smogged today with no issue. I'm pretty sure I would have failed the visual inspection as the cracks in the boot were pretty evident once pinched a bit. Thanks to the help in this forum, I was pointed in the right direction otherwise I would have been looking for fuel delivery related problems like the FPR or fuel injectors. Thanks to all and I hope this helps someone else! |
