Wipers stopped working. Not a fuse or a relay.

It was raining yesterday and my daughter wanted me to drive her to school. So instead of taking the G35 or the PORSCHE or one of the Lotus, I decided to take the X. If we got into an accident due to the rain, at least I wouldn't have lost one of my nice cars lol. Dropped her off and headed back home but on the way home, the wipers decided to stop wiping. Played with the switch, nothing except that the rear wiper was still working. Great something else to fix. Got home and the first thing I check was the fuse. The fuse was ok. Went on the internet and someone mentioned that they got their wipers to wipe again after reseating the relay. So tore apart the front cowl to get to the e-box, took out the relays, tested the relays with my ohm meter and they all tested good.

Put the relays back into the e-box and wiggles the wiper arms so if the wiper motor was on a dead spot on the commutator I might get it on a good spot. Turn on the wipers and the wipers started to wipe, but it was making a rubbing noise. Turn off the wipers and turn them back on and again they wouldn't work. Again I wiggle the wipers and notice that they appear to be binding. Started the wipers and they were wiping, but that rubbing sound turn into a screeching sound. Looked at the wiper transmission and linkage and could see that the linkage was rubbing against the motor arm that was connected to the wiper assembly. Wiggle the motor and notice a lot of play in the motor mounting. Did they mount the motor on rubber to remove some of the vibration? Got a 10mm socket and proceeded to tighten the bolts. They were really loose. So the mounting bolts must have back out after 15 years of service. Took each bolt out and put a little Blue Locktite on them and proceeded to tighten them back into place. Afterward, I turn back on the wipers and they started to wipe but the rubbing sound was now gone, and the wipers turns on every time I turn them on. So if your wipers stop wiping and it not a fuse, check the mounting bolts.

Good advice, given with your usual dose of negativity. You must have a reason you keep the X5 around?

I've had this happen on my e30 before. Will check the bolts on the X5.

Reason for my X:

It has a tow hitch to tow the boat and the jetski, a tow hitch to put my ride on bike carrier for my bikes, cross bars on the roof for a Kayak carrier, ross bars on the roof for the bike racks (the kids and wife bikes, not mine) cross bars on the roof for the cargo box for camping gears and ski snowboard equipment.

None of my other cars have a tow hitch or a roof rack.
