OR I could just start over with the 2003 Sport version...

….Additionally, are there any others out there doing this conversion to their own X5?! I'd be interested in knowing if others out there are doing this!!…

I had made a post a little while back of a guy not to far from where I live that swapped a 4.6is to 6 speed. It was rwd of course. But I was doing the math and looking at transmissions on Car-Part.com and for the price of an auto I can buy an entire 540 parts car in good shape. If a person has the time, tools, and space it would almost make more sense to do the swap.

The big issue is that not many people have time, tools, or space to do it. I haven't found any specific numbers written down anywhere. No prices, no specs on what to make the custom parts to... I've been away for a while so correct me if I'm wrong. But is there a full write up of the swap? It would need a link in the how to section of Xoutpost if there was

I have a full 5 speed swap for a 3.0 e53 and I made a recent purchase of a 4.6is that needs a transmission. I just need the trans and driveshaft from a 540. I think I can make the linkage, peddles, master cyl. and everything else from the other swap work.

I say do the do the 03' Sport. I swapped the sport interior, lights, and exhaust from a 2000 4.4 Sport into my 5MT and any my only regret is that I wish that it came factory with it. Would it hurt the wallet too much if you started over with a new car instead of swapping all of the parts from the "donner" X5? It would be neat to see how fast the start to finish time can get on an X5 swap.

Good day!!!!!

First off, I'd say lets get a 540i 6-speed trans and make the 4.6is something special!! I'm kinda waiting for my own 2002 4.6is trans to fail so I can do the conversion to it! I have a 540i parts car ready for tear down...

This whole thread is kinda the write-up journey I made converting the 2001... The trans, flywheel, and clutch are easy pull from the 540i... The trans mounts are a combo of fab and 540i parts... The pedal is OEM with an extra pin in the mounting bracket and pedals from the 540i... Wiring is time consuming, but written out exactly as I did it to the 2001... the 4.6is would need some more verifying, but suspect it is the same... Shifter stuff and drive shaft are truly custom... Welding is required on both... Drive line shop did my drive shaft.... I did (with a little help) the tig aluminium welding and mig steel welding...

It is odd you mentioned time needed for complete conversion... My son and I had planned on having everything ready on the shelves.... Pull the patient into the operating room and start the clock...... We feel wiring should be first... All the spare (dead weight) parts are pulled out of the way when required to complete wiring... Removal of all remaining dead weight parts are next... Then install of new stuff.... One or two final checks prior to start up... Once running and working, hit the stop button on the clock... The only thing I really want to do differently this second time around is leave the carpet complete... I want to see if I can feed the hydraulic line thru and in place without cutting the carpet... The drive seat might need to come out, but I feel I can make it work...

Okay... I'll do my best these next couple weekends I have to take precise measurements of everything and do a real write-up...

Thanks for your thoughts!!!

Cheers for now!!!

Thanks for the update williamX5. I wish I could do a 6mt swap on the X5. I currently have no manuals in my life and after spending the weekend driving a buddies 6mt F30 a little bit... I realize how much I miss rowing my own gears.

I think most of what is stopping people from doing this is the lack of trail blazing (you help a lot here), the cost of components necessary, and of course the time to accomplish. Most who would be interested in this are older gents, have kids, house, etc to tend to and so can not afford the time necessary to perform and then troubleshoot a swap like this. The guys who can afford the time to do swaps are doing them in e30's as the barrier to entry, cost and technology wise, is much lower.

You are a hero in my book. Keep up the good work. I'm hoping to one day follow the trail you've blazed.

Thanks so much for the support!!! I'm glad I am not boring those on here!!

I had discussed the idea with my son of setting up an "assembly line" per se'.... I would make everything on the bench, to exacting specs, right down to wiring harness... Pull the patient into the shop and swap everything out in a day or so... Then get the patient back the owner... This would be for those that want it done, but don't want to do it themselves... Or those that don't have the time... I would even loan out my converted version while the patient was in the OR.... BUT!!!! I don't have my shop yet... It is LONG overdue, and I'm getting anxious about getting it done...

Having done the conversion, I have a good idea of how to go about doing it faster the second time around. I think my son and I (and any volunteers) could get it done rather quickly... Specially (technical term), if all the parts are ready to drop in... I have two pedal assemblies, one hydraulic line, all the switches and such, trans cross member, and associated hoses... I do need a few more items to have a fully complete compliment of parts... Shifter arm and rod is needed... Shifter can be sourced from the 540i, but I found the Z3 shifter the best all around... Shifter trim and boot... Yada yada yada... I should get the drive line shop to make me another one... They take forever, but so far have proven worthy...

I'll need to take inventory and go from there... Along with getting exact measurements... I'll work on all that this weekend if time and weather permits...

Cheers for now!!!!!

Just determined it was because in my options I had 'display 200 posts per page' and changing it to 80 fixed it. Now I can read this entire thread !

Good day all!

So, I still don't have my shop..... Thank you very much Covid! I actually have a 2003 in my garage replacing the automatic transmission... I used the one i pulled from "Manny" to put in this one. I had to repair the "A" clutch drum and pressure regulator, which is also what failed on the one i pulled.... I think the hard, high RPM 5th to 4th downshifts are the issue.... Or giving it gas, not realizing it's not in "D"...

I thought about putting one of the manual transmissions I have in it, but that would take a while...

As some of yous may remember, my sister got Manny after the conversation... I still have my Imola red 4.6is... it has a few more bruises, but it's still going strong with the original auto... Manny, on the other hand is really ill! He needs rear bearings, a clutch, front control arms, and a little massage on the front bumper and drivers door... The deer should really stick to the designated road crossings (where the signs are)!! It still has the trifecta lights... Recently my red brake light is coming on... He is due in the shop on Tuesday when Silvester-II get back on the road... BUT Manny is still on the road without any complications, other than not figuring out the trifecta lights... So, i think this long term test has gone well... Normal wear and tear... I will say the rear bearings failing may be due to the rear wheels doing all the work... But not positive on that... The heated driver seat is really bad! This was a test subject, so i didn't do the sport package like i should have...

I have two, nearly complete set-ups... I need the custom drive shaft, completed cross member, shifter rod and custom shifter carrier... And a few other things...

Cheers for now everyone!

Good update. The trifecta I'm almost positive is going to come down to module coding.

William, should you ever decide to put a price on a swap, drop off - pick up style, let us know. I'd seriously consider buying a pre-LCI (must be pre-LCI right?) just to have the conversion done on. I still have no "Manny" in my life.

Good day everyone!!

So, I've had some problems getting my shop finished... And I need to thin out the number of projects I have going... With the current condition of Manny, the family feels it's time to let it go.... It's been super amazing all these years! But I need to focus on the other projects I need to do...

So, I'm kinda putting this in here to give a farewell to this amazing project!! It's a shame a lot of my pics got lost when Photobucket did what they did, but it's fine...

So, what are the thoughts on this everyone?!

Cheers!
