Oh, and you crack me up. Don't touch your sub! I ordered the speakers I'm going to futzle with. They should be home when I return. If it works/improves, this could be huge for the folks who want a little more oomph for a lot less $$.

So, if it's true that a coax speaker will produce highs and lows even if it's replacing a simple component mid, that opens up a lot of options for an upgrade. Clock? Are you sure that it would work? If so, at $35 I might still be convinced to replace the tiny rear tweeters I put into the mids with trimmed down Memphis Audio ones. They sound great now. I can even hear the highs from the rear while I am driving. I think the audiophile calls that imaging, but I dunno. But it's inexpensive to test if it would be better with larger speakers. Thoughts from the group as well?

OK boys I did some digging - Good news!!!
The mystery rear door midranges are 65mm so just about 2.5" - They are the SAME part number whether you have DSP or regular "Hifi" - and they are the SAME speaker used in the rear panel of the E46 coupe - and guess what, those speaker sets are still available from BSW - I already have an email out to see if they sell those 65mm midranges separately, if so, even at another $100, might be worth it to have the proper fitting and proper sounding speaker in that rear door panel. So far my investment is $35 for the Memphis Dash Midranges, and anticipating $140 for the C2-600 component set (2 midbasses and 2 tweeters) and either buy a second set or 2 more midbasses separate. My goal is to keep it under $300 to upgrade all speakers -

When you removed the factory midbass, was there a frequency cancellation capacitor soldered onto the speaker? It would be soldered between the connection plug and speaker wire leading to the cone. Probably small black piece. If so it's likely the amp is pushing full sound range to speaker but this capacitor is cancelling out frequencies of unwanted range. I'm also thinking since there are many wires run from amp to speakers, the amp has a dedicated crossover built in to the amp to do this frequency cancellation even before the signal leaves the amp. I'd have to see the factory speaker honestly. Doesn't hurt to try adding a coaxial speaker (they usually have no capacitor, or if they do it's to block low frequencies the speaker just can no reproduce cleanly) Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

my 850i had a missing frequency range of the 200-2,000hz until I fixed the foam surrounds of the mids (yes completely easy adn possible without buying new speakers) and its wonderful again. I'd hate to have that frequency range missing, BUT I guess since its just back seats anyhow, and you have the full range of music up front, its more just fill (imaging as you said) anyhow...

Well and now to update with bad news - After asking Bavsound, they told me they no longer do speaker pairs and can't ship just those remaining ones, even though they no longer offer E53 packages -
Basically too bad so sad. However, I wonder if the outer metal ring on the Memphis Audio ones can be trimmed down and can be made to work in that location as a midrange speaker as intended.

FWIW, I used the flat side of an air cutting wheel to grind/trim the Memphis Audio outer edge to allow the factory dash grille tab to clear and seat properly.
This made quick work of what I needed to remove from the outer edges. Mike
