why no just remove the current Memphis set you have now and modify them and reinstall?
the factory black mesh/screen covers any/all mistakes no?

PS: how do you pry up that screen? from back looking forward, or side?

You're right Mike its one of those things that drives me nuts LOL

Another one of our members might buy the set cheaply off me for $20 so I don't mind getting another set to work on -

However, I actually might buy those Tang Band midranges that I referenced a couple posts up (just to try, and give people more options) - Looks like Parts Express is in Ohio and it would be really simple to pop the dash grille out, unscrew the Memphis unit that is sitting there and test fit (before dremeling the mount) to see if it lines up well enough in the factory mount enough to take the plunge -

If they won't do the job, 2 screws and 5 mins to reinstall the Memphis unit, and then box them up and send back for refund to Parts-Express -

Just was wondering about the 10W RMS vs. the 15W RMS of the Memphis units before I do so -

EDIT: Mike, I pried up on the side of the grille, there are 2 tabs at the windscreen and 1 in the middle of the grille at the rear - I didn't want to pry at the tabs because the grille is stiff plastic and not flexible so I didn't want to break them - just use a plastic pry tool -

For science, I also bought 2 each of these to test in the factory midrange location in the dash, and 1 of them is an 8ohm driver like factory - If I don't like the fitment I will return them (but if I do like the fitment I will quickly do a splice to see how they sound before deciding whether to keep the Memphis Units) - Just looking to give people options!

The Tang Band ones with the aluminum cone were purchased(small pic below) along with these 8 ohm drivers from Fountek - Prop I'm sorry to be derailing your thread but keeping all recent speaker upgrade info prevalent in one thread is helpful for the future I think - you can slap me if you want tho.

Link to Fountek 8ohm Drivers, if these work out "the best" in regards to fitment and sound, then they would be a good alternative to the Memphis units as they are priced similarly - (82.3 db efficiency, 15w rms / 30w peak, 8 ohm)
https://www.parts-express.com/founte...river--296-725

Tang Band (10W rms / 20w peak, 87 db efficiency, 4 ohm) - https://www.parts-express.com/tang-b...river--264-807 (note that it says "midrange e46 replacement" in the comments)

Alternatively if anyone wants a pair or both pairs after I decide which ones I'm keeping, I'll cover shipping - as I'll eat it if I end up not liking either of them and keeping the Memphis units -

thanks for that!!

and for the price I get your point, thats practically free speakers to play with. And I'm glad you mentioned the idea of ovaling the Memphis speaker screw holes out (towards the speaker itself I assume) and then they fit better...
I'd assume that modifying the basket with a dremel (no tin snips here) will be easy and professional looking too.

OH and 10w will cap out too early/fast. stick with the 15w at least

Correct - if you look at the picture of the holes on the Fountek that is about how they should look on the Memphis, although I got mine screwed down just fine, they could have been a bit more "flush", one of the "ears" on the Memphis unit did buckle a bit as I was screwing down into the mount, as the screw was not totally straight/true when reinstalling the new midranges -
I'd assume that modifying the basket with a dremel (no tin snips here) will be easy and professional looking too. That will work, just might be a few mins more time consuming.

Will let you know Mike for sure either way, but likely will end up sticking with the Memphis units - so if I send back both sets to Parts Express and sell my first set of Memphis for $20 then I really am only out about $20 at most and got to play around a bit -

Maybe I will like the sound of the Fountek units better than the Memphis, since they are 8ohm and 15w units I will try those out first - and there is a review of them with a guy saying they were excellent in an E46 wagon

I also trust Jay as he had BSW speakers that he was replacing that were 4ohm, but I still get worried about taxing the factory amp too much with converting the whole DSP to 4ohm -

Whereas as I mentioned to semcoinc(Mike #2), theoretically if these 8ohm midranges fit and sound great I could use those and 4 of the Dayton Reference 8ohm woofers, and thus only converting 40% of the speakers (2x Vifa midranges for rear, and 2x JL tweeters for front sails) to a lower impedance - only kicker is that the Dayton woofers are about 7mm less diameter than the JL's so maybe not as easy of a fit -

I'm trying to keep this as minimally labor and parts replacement intensive as possible is all - and to keep the health of my factory amp as long as possible.

Also Prop, forgot to tell you - If the Memphis lookalikes don't work for the E46 midranges, I'm fairly certain one of the pairs I just bought from PartsExpress would work - If you want them I'll cover shipping -

Thanks! I still havent connected my soldered speakers in stock enclosure to my mother in law's '01 with DSP. I will, I will... Probably should do THAT before I get TOO far along on the E46.

Just in case anyone wants to use the Dayton Audio woofers which are a wee bit smaller than the 157 (160mm rated) JL woofers - the Daytons are 150mm

This guy on Ebay will custom make a few MDF mounting rings for about $20 for a set of 4 to make that install easier - figure 160mm x 1/2" should be easy to glue in place and then glue and screw the new driver onto the mounting ring.

MDF Speaker rings, 6 1/2" x 1" thick | eBay?

Those are sharp! Are the VR's a step up or down from the TR series you installed in your X?

Looking at the specs of the VR I would surmise that the TR is a replacement for those speakers. Still a better performer than the stock drivers in the X5.
