Ride comfort on the 132 rims

Currently, my wife's 2006 3.0 is on the stock 17's. I really the love the look of the 19 inch 132 wheels. I have been thinking about upgrading to the 132 wheels. For those of you that have gone from 17's to 19's, or currently running the 132 wheels, how compliant is the ride on the 19's?

Also, is it safe to run spacers on the X5? Will spacers it interfere with the AWD system? If it's ok to run them, what's the recommended spacers setup?

Thanks.

I went from 18's to 20's on my 3.0. While the ride was fine, the 20" wheels I chose were heavy. I could definitely tell that this made the ride much heavier in feel- both acceleration and handling on the street. I understand that many people would either not notice or not care. But if you're asking, you probably would.

Since weight is the biggest key to my experience, the advice I will offer is to find a set of OEM 19" wheels. I would not choose replicas even if tempted by the lower cost. They are usually very heavy as compared to OE. Hope that helps.

Ride comfort is relative depending on who you ask. Everyone's butt dyno is different. With that said, I love how mine rides and handles with 19s. I went from 17 to 19 on my non-sport 3.0i. Only down side is tire cost. For some reason, most OE 20" tires are cheaper than OE 19" sizes

We went from 18" Style 69s that were OE on our '01 3.0 5 speed to Style 132 19s, several years ago.

The ride is 'different' and I am occasionally aware of that larger rotating mass. But, we have the sport pkg, (though it's old and tired), so we were/are used to slightly stiffer ride.

The mpg didn't blink as far as I can tell. Still enjoying the old car for this old driver, as it heads into its 16th year with 110k miles.

Some things to consider:

If different rims change the total height of tire and rim it will change the rate of acceleration and the rpms the engine is running at all speeds. If the total height of rim and tire is greater it will decrease the rate of acceleration and the engine will turn less rpms.

Recommendations for acceptable wheel spacers should be based on the same rims as you are running since different rims have different offsets. Good spacers bolt to the rotor and come with longer lug bolts to compensate for the spacer width.

A stiffer or softer ride from only a change of tire and rim is largely based on the tread rating, stiffness of sidewalls and the distance from the rim to the ground. Lower profile tires generally make the ride stiffer and have stiffer sidewalls.

If the total weight of the tire and rim is increased, especially if the majority of the increased weight is the tire and/or the outside of the rim it will result in a negative impact to performance and handling.

If your goal is to fill the wheel wells it is better to stay with what you have, lower the vehicle and add spacers. You already know what the ride will be like, performance won't be impacted and handling will be improved due to wider stance and lower center of gravity.

This doesn't mean you won't be happy going the route you are suggesting. If you don't drive hard you might not notice and if you do you might not care.

A wealth of information you guys have provided, thanks.
Once I find a decently priced used set, I will make the switch.

Great to see you still hanging around here mD - you need to drive that old girl more often

Mine just turn 13 with 123K miles. Still purrs like the day I brought it home. Never gets tired of looking back at it every time I park it

I went from stock 17" from the old 3.0i to style 132 and have no regret.
