Exclamation PLEASE HELP! 2005 X5 4.8is - cranking strong - won't start...

Sorry guys...tried a search - nothing relevant.

I just changed my spark plugs today - NGK Iridium IX (from NGK Iridium). I started the car after the change - VROOM! Turned it off, washed & vacuumed her, tried to start her to move her forward, she just cranks (cranks strong, but just cranks). Occasionally feels like it will catch...but it doesn't.

What could cause this? Did I unplug something while vacuuming? Feels like the fuel is shut off. FEELING PRETTY STUPID RIGHT NOW. I am in trouble if I don't get this started tonight - PLEASE respond ASAP.

Thank you as always!!

Did you plug everything in secure. Like the maf? Did you put the coil tie down brakets back on. Have you tried giving the car a boost?

Sounds like fuel delivery to me. Your fuel pump could have just failed. There is usually no indication of the failure, it just goes.

SlickGT,

What's the "maf"? I did pop all coils back on, snap them closed and screwed the brackets back in (all 4 of them).

dinan e39,

It FEELS like fuel delivery to me. Is there a way to reset the fuel pump?

The maf is the sensor on the intake. Between intake filter and throttle body. I am sure you took it off. There is a plug on the tube, which goes to your maf. Make sure it's in.

You can reset fuel pump by pulling the fuse, waiting a min, and put fuse back. Some have reported that to do the trick. don't remember where fuse was, trunk or glove box.

one fuse is in glove compartment, fuse 47... check the legend, to make sure it is correct one - it is listed as fuel pump relay

Fuel Pump

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank. It is switched on and off by means of a relay and delivers the fuel via the fuel filter to the fuel distributor pipe.
Fuel pump relay

The control unit can only monitor activation of the relay but not of the pump itself. A safety circuit ensures the relay can only be activated with the engine running and only shortly after switching the ignition lock to position 2 in order to build up pressure.
Once the engine shuts down, the DME control unit no longer recognized engine speed and immediately switches off the relay. This ensures that the fuel pump cannot continue running when the engine turned off.

If the engine cranks, there is nothing wrong with the key.

To OP, based on your description of events, you may have flooded your engine. A flooded engine actually sounds like a lack of fuel delivery on BMW's. Why do I believe your engine is flooded? You indicated you started your vehicle after replacing the spark plugs, and then you shut off the car. Although you did not state how long you ran the engine for, but I Assume for under 1 minute. An engine can become flooded after starting the vehicle and quickly turning the engine off.

How to clear flood mode quickly.

1) Remove fuel pump fuse
2) Floor the accelerator pedal, and keep it there
3) Vehicle is a V8 which has comfort start, start the vehicle several times until the immobilzer control unit stops by it self. Be sure to give the starter a break every 2 minutes, you may be able to start the vehicle sooner than that.
4) Continue to start the vehicle until it start to sound like it starting, when it does this put the fuel pump fuse back in.
5) When the engine starts, ease off the accelerator pedal and let the RPM's drop to around 3500, and then slowly ease it to idle.
