Strangely, these two modules coded without errors.

But there's definitely something wrong now.
After I code these modules, the central locking, for example doesn't work. The rear hatch button doesn't work, neither on the hatch, the center console button or the key. Who knows what else doesn't work.
I suspect it's been burned again by me connecting these newer modules.
When I reconnect the old module with the fins, the central locking works.
And when I press the rear hatch button with the old GM3 module in, I at least hear a clicking inside the GM, so I know it's sending the signal, but the rear hatch actuator probably burned again.

What gives?

Maybe because you’re trying to fit a GM3 w/sca to a car that doesn’t have sca. Facelift X5 had soft close access on the rear bootlid. You need a GM3 wo/sca.

I think this is the latest version for a pre-facelift: https://www.bmwgm5.com/Images/GM3/GM3_6940923.htm

Ahhh that makes total sense, thank you!
I guess it's a warning to others, don't install the newer version or your trunk lid actuator will burn, like mine did twice!

This is good to know. I didn't even realise pre-facelift didn't have soft close feature. It seems the bootlid lock wiring is completely different on these models and there are no coding options to facilitate so they are different module specs.

I put a used GM3 in my 2003 4.6is to alleviate the Power Steering issue I was having (not engaging). Purchased from Ebay and installed, no issues since (2 years ago).

They're both GM3.
But I'm curious did you put the one with or without softclose? The one on the bottom or the top of the picture in post #22?

I'm wondering if there's a way to tell which newer modules have the soft close option and which do not?
Maybe just need to figure out the date this option was introduced. I didn't even know what facelifted E53 had soft close option!

This is a trick question, right?

Or have I misunderstood the question and the text on the module that says "E53 W/SCA" is a red herring?

So does my 2001.

I don't mind it, but it's one more thing to fail eventually.
