I think with the E53 it's "done" when you have the confidence it can go cross country smoothly. Other than basic maintenance the E53's don't have a lot when it comes to upgrades, but IMHO that's probably for the better. Over my years of tinkering one thing I've learned is sometimes it's better to just leave certain things alone because occasionally the manufacture gets things right. With the exception of being AWD and auto my 4.6is is perfect. I don't really want more power out of it or big FI power at least. It rides great and when I get in I feel content. My jeep on the other hand is purpose built and constantly going through upgrades. While it doesn't drive great around town when it comes to camping and getting to the middle of nowhere there's nothing else I want to be in.

I think everyone hit this one topic on the mark. "It is done, when it is done". Maintenance is always ongoing. Repairs and replacements are always ongoing as the miles pile up. Mods have a way of popping up as you see more of them on the internet - that technology is the biggest productivity sucker ever!

Long life to the X5!

That's a pretty good litmus test - would I get in and drive from Seattle to Los Angeles (or some other distant place I'd have a reason to go) without doing a lot of prep and hope. I like that.

As for the general consensus, yeah - done when it's done.

Yeah, Texas to Wisconsin twice recently for me and no worries.

Once with about a 4000# trailer and another time without.

From sea to shining sea 4x's now! And many places in between! This Summer, it's the NorthEast. NYC, Niagra, and mayyyybe Maine.
