Heater inlet pipe along the block...who has changed it?

How many of you have changed it, and what's involved as far as gaining access? I'm, referring to the hard plastic line that runs the length of the block underneath the intake manifold for those that are wondering.

The heater inlet pipe is the last of my complete cooling/heater overhaul...but while I had planned on doing it with my heater valves & aux water pump today...after looking at the location of the thing decided tackling a glass of scotch was far more enjoyable! Lol.

For reference, under the 3.0 cooling pipes diagram it's listed as pipe 8. Here: RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 3.0i Cooling System Water Hoses

Ive replaced it a few times. Each time due to it being blocked. Not a big deal. Clean work but a fair amount of time.

Why do you want to replace it? Is it leaking, or is it preventative?

I figured it would be similar to the OFHG repair; straight forward... Just long in terms of labor as it's under everything.

@Doru: It's just a preventative measure. The pipe does have a double o-ring seal on the one end, and since everything else is new in the system I'm just being thorough. I'm also running the Stewart water pump and I really don't feel like taking any chances with old components. (Yes, the rad is on the list for spring)

I pulled the intake off on my 530 to change it. Just as well because there were rotten vacuum lines in the back of the intake that are hard to see/get to anyway.

My e39 has the same engine as yours, I also have the Stewart WP. I did a cooling overhaul, but I haven't changed that solid (plastic) pipe. My understanding is that that particular pipe isn't as much prone to cracking as the rubber hoses. The only time I would change that pipe is if the O-rings would start to leak - to pry it out you need to force it a bit, and that might induce additional (unseen) stress to a cyclical cold-hot submitted plastic part. My engine is also older than your M54, and with the Stewart WP I could observe a decrease of max KTMP of 2-3°C. Also, in hot days, under heavy traffic conditions (heavy stop-and-go with idling), the KTMP never went above 96°C, whereas with the OEM WP, I could see some 98°C and higher KTMP quite frequently. This makes me believe that the Stewart WP will make last the plastic components much longer.
As I said, I would monitor the area where the pipe plugs in the bottom of the engine block for dripping, and I would change it only then (busted O-rings).

Thanks for the input! I would also put my money on the O-rings leaking before the pipe itself failed. I actually have the pipe on-hand as I ordered it with my heater valves and Aux WP....it's just the time to put the darn thing in im short on! Like I stated before it's merely a preventative measure as it's currently NOT leaking/seeping....I've done everything else at this point, and would just feel better if I could cross this one off the list as well.

My 2006 X5 M54 with 125K is doing fine, no leak from the heater plastic pipe.

the E39 M54 cars are getting older (compared with E53), and a few people report either the O-rings leak or the plastic pipe cracks a bit, leaking coolant, nothing catastrophic but slow leak.

My question is: those with E53 M54 engine with plastic pipe leak...
1. When did it happen (year/mileage)?
2. What is the mode of failure: leaking O-rings vs cracked plastic?

I am trying to figure out WHEN to do my preventive maintenance.

Thanks!
