Rough cold starts and funky acceleration

Been having an ongoing issue with the X starting after sitting for a while, a while being 48 hours+. Basically what it will do is once I start it it will rev high up to 2-2.5k then immediately drop and almost die or die. It will only do it after sitting. After I drive it it won't have any issues starting and fires right up as long as it doesn't sit. The other thing is after starting it and driving it will surge on acceleration. It feels like it's not getting enough gas and then gets flooded and goes flying. Has not thrown any codes. Any one have any ideas? I was maybe thinking a new fuel filter might be needed.

Hey Smokey!!

This is almost too odd that you are having a similar issue that I am with my 2006!! I don't get the crazy high surge, but idle is erratic... Slow to normal acceleration is plagued with hesitations followed by brief surges of power... If I floor it, all is right with the World and she shifts thru the gears like butter!! I do have a code of P0373 (timing reference yada yada yada)... I am considering replacing the throttle assembly and the gas pedal assembly due to the part throttle hesitation/surge... And the crank position sensor due to the code... It helps that I have spare parts parked next to the 2006, in the form of a 2004... I think I will toss in the spare coils and get some new plugs, just to rule them out...

I was going to get to this tomorrow, along with the rewiring of "1"... I'll let you know what I discover...

Cheers!!!

Thanks for the info Will. At some point I need to get new plugs and coils. Imagine those are a little done. It will be parked this winter so I may try and do the timing guides and some other stuff. Maybe get a fancy 6 speed in their......

Although I had a similar issue with an 01'-3.0 auto I am not sure it will apply. For my X it was a broken DISA valve. Did the rebuild kit, checked the vacuum and I was good to go.

Just the Bosch OBD scanner from Orileys. The german shop down the road from my work looked over it a few weeks ago and didnt find anything either.

Good day!!

So, I thought my issue was gone, or maybe just asleep since my SES light has not come back on in a while... ALTHOUGH, this morning on the way home from work, she hesitated and I had a total loss of power... I glanced down at the cluster to see the battery light on, then abruptly disappear as the power came back on... Obviously, I didn't loose a belt, so I wonder if there is a problem with under or over voltage from the alternator at times... It didn't happen long enough for me to get a full picture of the situation... Unfortunately!!! So, I am going to just swap out the items I had initially prepped for, and see what happens... I hadn't swap anything out due to the SES turning off and the X running normally...

We'll see what happens!!

Cheers!!!

If the service engine soon light has come on there should be a code(s). Some scanners do not read al the necessary BMW codes to diagnose a problem.

Nevertheless, I think it best practice to alway troubleshoot until there is a high likelihood that the problem is pinpointed. This is especially true when the symptoms can be generated by several different unconnected problems. In the end it almost always saves time and money. As an example, are the several suggestions for fixes in only a few posts.

Ditto. When my 5 speed was doing it, we thought that we could hear an audible "Tick" noise coming from the engine bay when it would have an erratic idle. The local BMW shop suggested that the ticking noise could be an injector hanging up, or a coil pack going bad. But one of the employees there said to check vacuum first. And it only did it on chilly mornings with a cold start.
