**SOLVED***. Replaced alternator, started now DEAD

So after checking and rechecking all the connections it turns out the cable to the battery post was not clamping fully on the post though the nut was tight. Re positioned it and tightened it up and we are running. Just goes to show you check and then recheck. I'm thinking it was the week of 100f that fried my brain

Hi all,

Still nursing the e53 along. Replaced the alternator the other day, got it all back in and it started right up so shut it down

2 mins. later it wont start, no click, no interior lights, no nothing. Battery checks out ok, terminals are clean and tight.

Is there a main fuse in the one of the battery cables or before the fuse box that could have blown? other thoughts?

TIA

New or used Alt? Could be bad internals and draining the battery... I had that happen to me twice... once in my 540i and the other in the 4.6is...

Cheers!

You should get either:
1. Bosch AL0703N (around $200 or so), which is 120A type.
2. Valeo is available in 120A vs 140A (140A with extra package heated seat and all that jazz).

The alternators at local auto parts store are mostly junk Chinese stuff.

Check your work. Always start with the premise there are no coincidences when working on a vehicle.

Good day!

On a side note... the 540i has the water cooler alternator and I found one in the YPIY for the basic alternator price... OEM item, but used... Still going strong almost a year later... I had planned on selling it in favor of another X5, but it worked out that I could hang on to it longer...

New OEM is probably the best bet though...

Good luck!

Cheers!
