wpoll will become famous soon enough
I have also done this job (new boot and grease only) by popping the axle from the CV joint. Only needed to remove the inboard end of the rear lower arm to get enough clearance. Tricky to pop the axle from the CV joint because of the circlip but a light tap in the correct place (with a helper pulling on the joint) and it just popped apart.

Dead easy. $20 and two hours, including all prep and clean-up. And a beer.

On my replacement CV the circlip was bent funny and prevented installation. I had to swap the clip from the old and it went right in. Find a video it's not a particularly hard job.

Brake Cleaner?

Also, earlier this year I did a complete front end suspension rebuild including the CV Axles. I got mine from AutoZone.com with a free shipping and discount promo. They are guaranteed for life and any AutoZone can process a warranty claim.

I don't relish the thought of the R&R work of a warranty claim but at least I'm covered for the part.

Paper towels to get the globs off is the only way. Then (if you want to make it perfect) brake cleaner should take care of the final film/residue.
