Need a used engine 4.6is - any suggestions

Hey guys,

After a really long story of 3 months in the shop and the mechanic ruining my engine, the shop is now going to either replace the heads or put in an engine.

Two questions, does anyone make a remanufactured engine for this vehicle or is there a place to look for a used one.

After replacing the timing chain the mechanic did not bother to check the oil pump and it was clogged with the plastic chain guide that got torn up...short end....the vehicle was driven multiple times with no oil pressure or oil in the engine. Shop replaced all the lifters but it still sounds terrible. Engine seems to run really good but just an amount of time before it goes out. Appears now that the cam is off somewhere causing the clicking noise since it has new lifters.

Such a nightmare but the shop did take responsibility for it. Too bad it took 3 months to figure out it needed heads or an engine. Who knows what all has gotten damaged.

If you really want to know the 3 month cycle of events just ask.

New timing chain and guide
New fuel pump
New lifters
New gaskets
New oil sperator

and now new heads or more.

Thanks

Shawn

Your best bet is probably Google. Search for Rebuilt or Reman BMW engines. There are a bunch of sites that come up.

I found a dealer that sells reman 4.6's, but they want something like 10 grand.

I found one for $6470 but at this point the shop will either have to spend another $2000 plus on heads and labor or buy an engine and put it in. It can't be worth much more that $9 or $10 grand with the miles but the car itself is almost perfect.

I have spent about $2500 but the shop has to have $3000 plus in labor in parts in it after what I paid.

I agree with what the above member said, I'm in the same boat as you unfortunately. My timing chain guides went out on my 2002 4.6is at the end of November, I heard the sound on start-up, knew what it was and shut it off immediately. So now I'm trying to decide on getting it fixed or buying a 1st Gen Grand Cherokee SRT8, a 4.8is is not in the pic, if I leave BMW I'm gone for good. One of the first things I did was search this site for more info, there's a thread about the guides and it recommends you clean out the oil pan and the oil pump.

i had a dead 4.6iS, with dead engine... it seems that the 4.6s that did not die in any accidents are dying with a BANG!!! the used 4.6 engine situation may have changed since i was trying to get mine fixed but it seems that the car should be either parted out or sold as is to whoever will buy it... I sold mine, AS IS for $3100, to Copart - 147K miles, 2002... I loved the car (bought a 4.8 to replace it) but had to let it go...

I understand about getting rid of it. Problem is that it is the shops fault so if I take it as is then I am stuck with it.all of the cost is on them at this point and then I won't use them again. It is a highly recommended shop and they have admitted fault so I will give it a couple more weeks. Without a new engine I am scared it will never be right at this point.

Thanks for the other info and links. Gonna Have To Wait This One out and see what happens.

You can get a new engine from BMW they have them, maybe their insurance will pay for it [or yours] ,from BMW of south Atlanta they wanted $16k,if You do make sure they have their top guys do it,there is a lot that can go wrong.
Don,t take the car other wise legally You are excepting their mistake................
Go to BMW online parts and You will find Your engine............good luck.
