very weird 2 axle self levelling suspension issues...

Hi guys.long time reader, first time poster

After having ongoing issues with the air suspension in my 04 E53 4.8is, I've narrowed my problem down to what I'm sure the issue is.

I'm in Australia and there's no support for these here

Are there any guys on here that knows Alot about the air suspension system for 2 axle suspension?? Im getting desperate.

I only just bought the car and this is a kick in the pants because I need to tow things with it.

I have a snap on Solus scan tool so can see everything that's going on with the controller.

I have noted that the rear left wheel has been rubbing on the guard and had previously rubbed through all the wires for the level sensor and the old owner had dodgy taped them up. I have removed the wiring and resoldered it all.

The issue lies in the voltage from the sensor read through the scan tool goes up and down correctly when you raise and lower the rear left side manually. But the height value in MM never reads below 0... If you raise it up the mm value increases as it should. All the other corners show a negative value if you lower it but the rear left never goes below 0....

So the controller is seeing the voltage that should be say - 30mm but it still says 0mm....

I have treid calibrating the suspension with my tool by going into suspension calibration, inputing 20" wheels, and measiring each corner height as it asks.. the pricess says complete but nothing happens ..

the front right always seems to get higher than the left side to by about 40 mm ... i think the rear left level sensor issue is behind it all .

the only codes i have are 73, accumulator pressure remains consistant , ( i have a air pump rebuild kit on order ) and i get a code for rear left height signal inplausable... not sure how or why though as im pretty sure its just an analogue voltage signal from the sensor ??

I hope someone can make sense of this and help me because Its doing my head in and I feel like I've wasted a bunch of cash . Cheers people.

Update. Replaced the level sensor and still have the same issue. Voltage reads from 0.5-5 volts but the height mm value doesn't go below 0...

Voltage at the sensor? Voltage at the brain? Measured with DMM or reported by the scan tool?

The info you report seems to indicate an error at the brain side. Is it possible to swap the left and right rear connectors going into the brain? If it's the wiring from the wheel causing the problem it will move the error from the left to the right.

Also did the mounting bracket get bent so the range of motion is screwed? The voltage will read fine when you test with sensor loose but when when installed you would have incorrect limits exactly like you describe. (a simple fix to an unbalanced system where for example the right rear is ten mm too low is to alter the bracket so the car thinks the tire is ten mm lower. Can you detach the sensor while the car is on its wheels and turn the sensor to get the car to level properly? (Leave tail gate open so it adjusts right away)

Hi mate. Yeah I have disconnected the sensor from the bracket and moved the arm up and down. Same problem.. Have also tried another sensor. I also agree it's at the brain. I feel that my snap on scan tool has stuffed something up in the software. I've ordered a gt1 and it should be here in 2 days. So I'll try and recalibrate it all with that and see how i go. I'm also keen to know if the same box from an L322 land rover will work. Same plug. Same box. 1/5 of the price..... Hopefully the can bus communicates with it.

Also. Voltages are read by scan tool so I know they are getting to the control module. Was just wonderingif anyone else might have had this problem?

With the sensor off the bracket. With the arm all the way down:height +78mm. With it halfway ish. 2.4v mm height. With it all the way up: .5 volts. 0mm.

If you do this with the other side. Once the arm is all the way up it reads - 68mm.... The left side never goes below 0.... I'm really hoping it's a software issue I can fix with the GT1

If voltage reads full range you have a good chance it's a calibration issue. Any way to swap the input left and right into the brain?

You can "spin" the land Rover box on eBay if it doesn't work it's already used and won't lose any more value. Before replacing I would open up and look dirt bad solder. The abs unit has a bad design that when fails can be fixed by reflowing three solder. Google search if the leveling brain has similar.

Hi andrew. I got inpa and managed to calibrate everything correctly... Now the 0 levels read correctly and the mm level now changes on all 4 corners with the voltage...
But...
OK so I have all the levels set and every corner gets there except the front right.... When the compressor is running the front right is inflating... All the time. But it does not loose air?? It's like there's a leak in the valve block that is allowing the compressor pressure to leak through to the front right bag..

This is giving me a code for pressure remaining consistent (because the pressure is going into the front right when all the valves are closed.... (viewed in inpa)

When the code is cleared and the pump starts again... The front right strut is inflating....

Any ideas?

Disconnect/bypass air line supply to front right strut......either after valve block or at Front strut air nipple.. ....pump air to strut at say 20 psi....check pressure does it deflate/hiss?

you can then rule out/investigate - air lines and bladder.

I'm not fuss with voltages on sensors.....I could never get the readings to be same for fronts and rears..... but make sure actual ride height from fender to rim flange....are close to or less than 5mms.....IMO.

Some ideas....

FIXED!!!

I dismantled the valve block. And purchased one from. An L322 land rover. The actual. Block fittings are slightly different but the valves. Seals and all the internal bits are the same... Swapped over the piston and seals from the land rover one Into the X5 block.. Fixed!

Car now goes up and down as it should.

Thanks everyone!
