There are 2 advantages (to me, anyway) for the 5 speed. 5th is straight through, which is stronger and has no noise compared to an overdrive. The 5's also came with the non-electronic transfer case, which is a simpler design than the later electronic x-drive cases. Neither of these are a big deal.

I plan to put 3.64 gears in mine to lower the RPMs across the board by 11%, which should be just right except when towing to the max.

You can install 3.64s from an early 4.4i and drop the highway rpms to a much more acceptable level on either the 5 or 6 speeds. My 5 speed now cruises 80mph at just a hair over 3k rpm. No adverse effect with 1st either. 100k miles and 6 years of use including towing, it was the best mod I've done

What's your before & after mileage with the 3.64 gears? In your experience.

I hunted for a 6 speed for over 6 months before I bought my 2005 3.0 automatic. I decided they were like unicorns.

You can read about them, find pics of them but never actually find one.

You can change the differentials pretty easily and go to any of the other 4 gearings offered.

I have 187k on my 5 speed OEM clutch, but I never did the clutch valve delete. It's a good unit, but I would have liked the highway gear when it was on the highway.

The real key to all 3.0s is the differential gearing. Because the torque from the 3.0 happens way up high for a 5000lb SUV, the 4.11s are about necessary unless you can add another 100 lb-ft of torque. If you went down to 3.64s, I feel like it would take forever to get off the line.

I'm not sure what is preferred, the 6-spd is the only one they used at the factory.

My X5 is from '05, the 6-spd manual is the only one listed in the owner's manual, well for a manual. The automatic is a 5-spd unit.

I STAND CORRECTED
There is another post about the change from the 4.6L to the 4.8L where there is a chart that talks about features of the various models. There was a 5-spd in the early X5s, that was changed to a 6-spd later on. The advantage of the 6-spd is that 6th is an overdrive gear, where 5th is 1:1. Why would one NOT want overdrive if it could be found?

It's been a while my fellow e53 comrades. I have owned 1 5M and 2 6M e53's. Love them. 6 speed is the way to go. I have 3.64 diffs. No problem towing, mpg is improved, and she pulls like a scalded rabbid pit bull thanks to the crazy tyranny gearing and some thoughtful mods. First gear is easier to live with. Should have been like this from factory. I do have to drop it down a gear or two on occasion to really get in to the torque band, but I can really wind out the gears. We drive pretty fast out here in the West. I see triples fairly often. 6th gear at 3400 rpm is about 100mph. Remember too, power to weight ratio favors a manual e53 @4500lbs.Very nimble, and agile.
