4.8is production

Hello, all!
I am thinking of switching my 4.6 to 4.8 model. Can anyone tell me which month and year they started manufacturing this model? (for customs duty purposes) Also, any thoughts or suggestion on this exchange? Is the new engine significantly better?

Thanks!

I believe it started in mid-April 2004. Models produced between April 04 to July 04 had a recall for DME.
4.8is have pano-roof and pano-roof on X5 was first introduced in mid-April 2004.

I was working off the etk for production dates.

Edit: Let me also state that LeMansX5 is far more knowledgeable on these matters than I am, so he is more likely to be correct. I've just accessed what info is avail, and is by no means 100%

Fuel consumption is better than 4.6is. 15 more horses. I have owned 4.8is for more than a year and very happy with it. Here is an article comparing with 4.6is

Correction - There is only an additional 15 horsepower and 10 pound-feet of torque over the 4.6is otherwise both are quite similar. The 4.8 does have more technology options. I love the 4.8is but have not upgraded myself because there are far more aftermarket performance components available for the 4.6is than for the 4.8is... You can supercharge your 4.6is adding over to 450 hp while the 4.8is is limited only to 380 or so after upgrades. See for yourself http://www.dinanbmw.com/ but this is not for everyone as the stock HP is usually more than adequate.

Honestly - I'd wait until the 2007 4.8is comes out in the new body style and pull the trigger then, otherwise you will be watching your investment depreciate quickly like the rest of us. I have driven & love both the 4.6 and 4.8 but hate watching the recent retail prices plummet in anticipation of the newer body style coming out. I'd persoanlly wait but good luck in your decision.

There is no 's' in the new 4.8i. The 'is' version will come later next year. I will wait for the X6 if you want the power. But for immediate need you can pick up a low mileage CPO 4.8is at a good price.
