If you upgraded your wheels...

There is a lot of debate surrounding OEM vs replica wheel upgrades. As a group, which route did we take?

I haven't upgraded my wheel, but I do plan on it in the near future. I'm going to get OEM 19's. From all of the horror stories I've heard re: replica's, I'm staying away from them.

20" replica style 87 upgrade

I am planning to upgrade 2001 3.0 with sport package to the 20" replica style 87. Would there be any potential harms to the car? I have not heard any negative feedbacks regarding the upgrades until this one that jaaX3 posted.

Justin.

I don't think it will do any "harm", but if you're going from a 17 or an 18 on a 3.0 up to a replica 20, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the car felt noticeably slower to you, especially on launch. I think the replicas are heavier than the OEMs, & you're going bigger to boot.

I haven't upgraded - I'm waiting for my Diamaris to wear out. My CPO 4.4i came with new tires. 20K miles later, the tires still look new.

When I do buy new rims, my style choice would be to buy a non-BMW style wheel such as a Hamann or ACS wheel probably 20's. I would take my time and shop for the best deal with a geniune name brand or OEM first because they are typically lighter, stronger, and better made than the replicas. However, the replicas aren't bad either; the makers of the replicas have been around a long time now, and have learned how to improve their product.

To me the question comes down to dinero and what makes the most economic sense. I'm probably going 20" replica Hamanns with the best tires I can find.

Well, I'm gonna go check out those 132's that are close by to me...
I don't have "the fever" and not sure I wanna put that kinda dough into our '01, but worth a look, locally.

My current puny lil' style 69 18inchers look ok, too...for 18s, lol!

You should add a choice for aftermarket brands like BBS, HRE, ACS, Breyton, etc. Not everyone went with replicas of OEM wheels. I got a set of 19" Mille Miglias from Tire Rack.

I will probably go with 20" 168 replicas sometime this year, unless I can find some OEM's at a good price.

Good point. Wish I had thought of that.

On a related note (in an unrelated way), I think it is interesting that nobody has bothered with 19" replicas. I wonder if the demand for 20" has driven down the price of the 19s?
