Thumbs down Eonon GA7166A 👎

First post here, I'll get the quick intro out of the way.
I work professionally in the automotive industry, starter as a mechanic a long time ago and own my own business in the after market world of car electronics.
Started 18 years ago in a car audio shop and haven't looked back since, I am a busy professional with years of experience in this environment.
I also own 4 BMW ranging from a e31 V12 a couple e36's (1 M3) and this recent
Purchase E53 (2006 sport package, 4 corner air 4.4 imola red 42,000 miles)

Ok, enough about me.

This E53 has factory Nav and DSP, it is a fully optioned car for audio/phone.

I bought this car for my wife and flew down to cali to pick it up, even brought a factory AUX cable so the drive home to Oregon wouldn't suck.

As it's my wife's car I thought I would keep things simple and just replace the failing screen.
I did that but the aux cable and USB cig charger and all its cables is annoying.
I am a pioneer and Sony dealer along with being able to get Kenwood and alpine, I've built plenty of X5's in my day and wasn't looking to go that route, don't have time and my wife doesn't need anything more then how the factory system sounds.
so after replacing the factory screen I was constantly annoyed with connectivity and how bad the factory screen washes in the sun.
Started looking at the direct fits and bought the GA7166A.

It had a lot of cool features and the direct fit and factory interface had me thinking it was a good deal.
Well, to clear up if it works with DSP, IT DOES. All controls worked and functioned, what didn't is the sound.
It doesn't match the factory volume output and the deck at high gain has lots of distortion. I'd say it comes in around 65% volume.
Shame, I really wanted to like this unit.
Sadly it didn't get pass being plugged in in the back for testing.
Too bad.
This issue might be caused by the auto leveling the DSP does at start up, I don't know if this is a 2006 up problem but either way even if I coded that out the amount of distortion this unit produces on its own is garbage and I'll I would end up with is louder distortion.

Anyone used anything different keeping the factory DSP they like?

Dynavin N6. It's very pricy- x2 the cost of your eonon, and it's a closed tight system - can't add software, no wifi feature.

I started looking at that the other day, I am not concerned too much about the money rather then its sound and function.
I see they even offer Ilink for it which might be super useful for my wife.
Have you used the dynavin?
I found a seller on eBay last night and asked them some questions, waiting on a reply.
I can't say I am surprised about the sound on the eonon, I've installed plenty of direct fits and wasn't ever overall impressed with them in the past.
I'd seen a lot of reviews here of people liking them, not this particular model.
Most didn't have DSP or bypassed it all together.

I've had the Dynavin N6 in my 06 E53 for two years now. The sound quality is excellent in my opinion. I don't have the professional background that you do, but I feel like even for the added costs this is a great option if you are not looking to do a wholesale retro of the entire system. It's very plug and play. The screen does wash in direct sunlight, but with the angle that the unit sits at in the E53 dash, I think your going to get that with just about any large display in that location.

Also, Jeff at JT Distributing is as solid as it gets on the customer service and support front. If there is something wrong he will jump through hoops to make it right.

Good to know, does yours have the DSP?
Thanks

I have Dynavin N6 on my E53 with DSP. If you don't care about wifi/internet, it's a good headunit- sound is excellent and it's the only system I know of that works with DSP with no modifications.

Here's a thread about its install on E53:

The eonon is plug and play too with the exstension harness, not that it's worth anything but pretty easy to figure out.
Unplug the head in the trunk, plug it into the exstension harness, plug the other end back into the OEM head. Atleast that's how this harness worked, I suspect it's why most say they have everything but no audio.
The instructions from eonon are vague at best.
Either way the unit sounds like garbage.
Long as the link you listed stands behind their product I'll give it a shot.
The wifi was cool, so was having chrome.
I don't care much and my wife doesn't at all, she wants it to sound good and function well.
Thanks.

Seicane claims their unit works with dsp. That's what I have but luckily I don't have a dsp factory radio.

Here is one successful Seicane install.

I've read a few posts with that brand and it still sw confusion between individuals that bought them and installed them.
That and it looks identical to an Eonon deck.
Eonon says this deck that I bought only works until 2005.
The place I bought it from on amazon says 2007?
Some of the older posts I've read say you need to set your base line, tried it and obviously it was no good.
I've read some other cross posts like the one you linked that are shared platform and have read similar problems.
Mainly I think it stems from the auto leveling the DSP does 2006 and up.
You can't leave the volume at full blast and get in the car the next morning, shit your pants because you were rocking out when you parked the car the night before and didn't turn the volume down.
Just a guess, but have seen similar subject matter based on this idea.
Not sure if the problem is that these units don't have the ability to tell the amp to turn it up or down or the fact that the units are to universal and they don't have any gain matching.
Either way, most head units will start to increase distortion around 80% doubling per 3db or 2db steps, nicer ones not until 85%
That being said, I was extremely generous saying 65% with Eonon.
The reality is more like 30% is start.
I'll try one more unit and then I am just gonna role up my sleeves and just go full boat.
If I do that I'll just flush a mini iPad in the dash and use an audison and 3 amps.
I am skeptically optimistic ☺️
I haven't looke at seican's too closely, I'll give it a better look.
🍻
