BMW Scanner 1.4 and BMW Software Suite. Both connect to the OBDII port under the dash.

So technically as long as I have a USB obd2 scanner and a laptop I can do this without any further costs?

For coding out the hot/cold checks on the LCM, the easiest tool is BMW Scanner 1.4 that will run on Windows XP and later. Cost is as low as $11 but comes from China and will take several weeks to arrive. I would look for one on fleaBay or Amazon that is coming from the US but may cost a few dollars more.

how can I tell what type of lighting is on my X? The only light option quoted in the vin accessories shakeout is S785 white direction indicator lights.
Thanks,
Tom

Led bulbs arrived, 15 min install. No errors / coding needed, at least if you use the ones suggested by Crowz. You will notice a flickering on the first 2 seconds after startup due to the cold check I guess. You could probably get rid of it by coding out the cold check but I don't really care so I will leave it this way until I will have to connect pa scanner sooner or later for other diagnosis purpose.

Concerning the improvement: It's a major difference on the first 15 meters in front of the vehicle, absolutely great! I also replaced one xenon bulb with a Nightbreaker and I've got to say that the improvement given by this model of bulb is also great. I'm totally happy about my light situation now!

Thanks a lot guys

If your X5 is a 2003 it does NOT have bi-xenon headlamps. Just the pre-facelift xenon version.

That aftermarket stuff is an "upgrade" for non Xenon cars. The wiring (may) be different. If you assemblies are in good condition you just need to use a kit like this one to refinish your headlights.
