When you lock the door with the remote the lights should go off within half a minute or so.

I have had problems with the lights when the cabin light button got 'stuck' it is not a normal on/off switch that defeats the light, it's just a remote control input button that sends a signal to the computer.
I've never intentionally used that switch, but I may have hit it when adjusting a mirror or something. I just got the car last spring, and am only now using it regularly in the dark - great headlights! I will just have to keep a much closer eye on the interior lights until I get this figured out. Right now, everything is working.

andrewwynn will become famous soon enough
as far as i know, the interior lights will shut off should you leave them on even if you use the cabin light switch (including rear seat). They will 'remember' however, for example I've left on the driver map light, come back into the car, have all lights come on when open the door, but when all the rest go off the driver map light stays on.

Because you had phantom rear hatch lights & tag light messages, I’d be inclined to check the wires leading to the upper hatch where they have to pivot with the hatch. In other words, within those rubber boots. You might have a broken/breaking wire or 2

Ditto the last to replies. BMW designed a 15-16 minute consumer cut-off...which should turn off the interior lights. But if you have something that is not powering down...this could prevent the car from going into sleep mode.

When you activate the remote key or unlock the vehicle, lift a door handle, etc...this puts the vehicle in AWAKE mode...and certain items begin operating in preparation of taking passengers (like the little sampling fan inside the IHKA control panel turns on drawing air across the thermistor inside...which determines the temp of the cabin).

Also, in regards to the fuses...the owners manual explains where they are located...and then when you go to that area...you should see the fuse number index (alphabetized) and the fuse bank layout (numbered with fuse's amperage listed).
Class/Lesson Hints:
  • KL 30 = ignition position 2
  • KL R = ignition position 1
  • KL 50 = ignition start position

E53 Fuse Location Info: from owners manual

Then when you go to the locations...you'll see the fuse index/fuse diagram

front/glovebox fuses - press indentations to lower fuse cover...you'll see this

rear/right cargo fuses - open panel and you'll see the fuse index adhered to the fuse carrier

Thanks for all the replies. I really hope its not a broken wire in the body to hatch boot. Our 2009 Subaru Outback, which we sold when we got the X5, went through two harnesses in that location. It was a huge problem with that particular series, and I spent a lot of time working on it. It's a good point though, and one I will have to follow up on if this problem reoccurs.

Thanks again.

Everything is working right now, so it's tough to track a problem. I will watch more carefully, and if this happens again, I will try pressing that button for 3 seconds, or pulling fuse 27.

For the record, the manual with this car is somewhat of a joke. It doesn't even have a fuse diagram. It seems written for someone that is going to have Jeeves change a fuse for them. That's why I appreciate this forum so much.
Don't know the extent of things you feel comfortable DIY but a Bentley service manual is a very useful tool to have.

Thanks again for all of this. So far, everything seems to be working. I'm not sure what caused the problem a few days ago, but I will be keeping a close eye on things, and be aware of any sequence of events leading up to any reoccurrence.

One other thing I learned in all of this is that it is a very bad idea to disconnect the negative cable from the battery, leave the sliding floor up, and then close the rear hatches. Luckily, I hadn't locked the doors, so I was able to crawl in, get my arm wedged down toward that battery by pushing the rolling floor back a few inches, and feel around until I could reconnect the battery cable and open the rear hatch. This car is obviously far too smart for me.
