I had my hood wrapped about 3 years ago. I go to a carwash once a week, never hand wash it. Wrap looks the same the day it was installed. Not all vinyls are the same quality. 3M is a good one. I didn't go with 3M because they didn't offer what I wanted. Sorry, don't remember the brand. I had it done. I watched the whole process. There is no way I would try to do it myself.

I chose to Plasti-dip my wheels about 4 years ago. Still look great. I have repaired one. I chose Antracite with 3 coats of glossifer because the color is very close to the wheel arch trim. Plasti-dip is easy to install.

The advantage of a wrap and Plasti-dip is that it can be removed without any damage to the paint and you can easily do something different.

Wow... Plasti-dip has lasted 4 years? I always thought it was a 6-9 MONTH application and needed to be re-applied..... (not sure why I thought that come to think of it, maybe read it somewhere)

That's totally worth the effort to plasti-dip the wheels !

Prep is easy with their prep and they have a dissolver to smooth out any spraying imperfections. Don't have to remove the wheels but I recommend doing so, makes it easier if the wheel is laying flat. No need to tape off the tire as it rolls right off. Tire shop I use warns they are not responsible for damage and did remove some from two wheels. I just repaired the area. Can't tell it was repaired. https://www.dipyourcar.com/?gclid=EA...SAAEgJf4_D_BwE They have lots of how to videos on Youtube.

Cost?
Id be surprised if you saw prices under $2k for whole job
Can you wash it?
Absolutely.
Does it fade?
Unsure have seen wraps on everything from Lambos to Jeeps and they seem to have held up well
Bird POOP?
Id clean it off as matter of principle. I wipe it off my clear bars as it will etch that
Dirt and grime? Not sure question here
How long does it last?
Sure will last years
Does it ruin the paint?
I have seen it rip paint off a car however the car was repainted and not prepped well. When they were removing the film the paint came off with it
How hard is it to remove? is it a DIY job or back to the shop for removal?
It can be a DIY but just takes a lot of patience
How long does it take to wrap an X5 ? 1 hour? 8 hours? a week? a month?
I would block a solid day to do it right. Right equals removing lights and other items so theyre not cutting around items or exposing edge that can peel back

Just addressing this for the wiki...
Any film, IMO is porus. It will take on road film, the mucky dirty greasy rain, etc...you want to keep it sealed as possible.

Skip the marketing or the myth. You can see this more on clear PPF film than colored vinyl. If/when you peel it off after 3 years, and just look through it (now that it's not sitting on paint), you will see how not ~clear~ it is and the much that it has absorbed through time.

That is the very reason why real pros refuse white cars to a certain degree.....
Granted coatings have come out and mitigate this problem immensely IMO, but it does discolor

I wrap my car in 3M 1080 vehicle wrap vinyl. For me 3M are the best, there are others out there. As stated earlier on this post, be careful if you don't do it yourself. I did a Honda FireBlade of mine in my evenings after work and took me about 3 weeks, panel at a time and it looked GREAT! Installers use strong magnets on the the car to hold the large roll out then rough fit it, then stretch it using a heat gun and an xacto knife or Norton-swan surgical knife to cut to shape and a felt covered squeegee to smooth to contours and push out air pockets. Tiny air pockets can also be 'picked' by inserting the blade at the bottom of the air pocket and making a tiny pin hole and then reheated and smoothed out. Again, its on the skill of the installer as to whether they nick your paint or not with the knife.

Hi Pre-H20,
I have wrapped my x5 00 with vinyl wrap carbon blue matte just like the new m5 2018 it looks fabulous, im based in ukraine so i will tell the following details according to our prices ; it took around 2500$ to wrap the whole car in a professional wrapshop took them 4 days and a half to wrap it totally, and with golden rims, all i can say is that you will most likely love the change and the fresh look of the car, oh BTW try to fit in a glossy roof for the panoramic look like, i think it will go neatly with a balack matte x5.

Cheers!

Where did you order your vinyl? I got mine at Gatorwraps. They have a lot of vinyl wraps with lots of colors to choose from.
