Rough Idle! What else can I check?

Hi All,

I have been having consistent rough idle problems with my M62 2003 4.4i that I can't seem to find the solution to. Basically any time the car is at low RPMs the engine is rough and the car shakes. All other times the engine works fine and is smooth but as soon as the RPMs drop... it gets rough. Seems worse when the engine is cold as well. I have replaced several things and can't figure out what to check next. Here is what I have done.

1) Replaced both valve cover gaskets (there was a lot of oil leak that I cleaned out)
2) Replaced MAF
3) Replaced CCV valve (had smoke coming from tailpipe)
4) Replaced oil separator and hoses (were leaking oil)

Does anyone have thoughts on what else could be the cause of the rough idle? It has been going on for quite some time and is quite annoying.

Thanks!

Sean

Need more input: fuel trim? Do you have smart phone app etc that can read real-time data?

No load idle problem points toward air vs fuel problem. Does M62 have DISA? Does it have IAC (idle air control).

A very helpful overall engine troubleshooting guide from BMW.

I am not super technical with engines. I have replaced all that I mentioned myself but do not have the technical knowledge. I dont have an app for fuel trim sadly. What would be one to get?

I use dash command (iPhone). I have a generic wifi OBD-II dongle. Most Android users recommend Torque Pro. (I have the pro upgrade or dash command: you need to get the pro version either way). What is the RPM of the engine? Does the shake mellow out when in neutral?

Sounds like an intake leak. Can you smoke test the intake?

As far as I remember the idle is rough in neutral and in gear. I will check again when I start the car.

I will have to get a smoker. Never done that before but a good idea.

You need to get some software if you plan on troubleshooting a bmw... Or you're going to change way too many parts to finally find the issue.

I use torque Pro (android), OBD auto doctor (macbook pro), INPA, PA Soft, TestO and they all have their uses.

For Torque Pro and OBD Software one computer, you need an bluetooth of wifi or usb OBDII Dongle.
For INPA and TestO you need the INPA cable (ebay or amazon)
For PA Soft you need the BMW Scanner cable.

Those will save you money in the long run and make life soo much easier.

I agree to troubleshoot for a vacuum leak somewhere and a smoke test is best method. Sometimes you can spray starting or brake cleaner fluid to find a leak. If you decide to do a smoke test there are several youtube videos showing how to build your own inexpensively.

I would lean away from vacuum leak since that always will show up honor cold. Truly need to to an Obd II test to see if it is showing codes. Too many sensors to just take a shotgun approach.
