Sorry to hear you had bad luck, I do admit it seems like a lot of work for something I have on my car (just unlocked it to see if I had the puddle lamps (and saw last night they were electrochromatic)).

Mine work and in the last 4 months, I've used them once, when I looked up the option number for you to check they worked. Its a cute option but not that useful in everyday life and certainly not worth the cost of the parts new IMHO

Thanks guys. I've just accepted the fact that this just won't happen anytime soon. I just can't justify half the value of my truck in a folding mirror retrofit...
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I had my ass handed to me on this one...

I know how ya feel. I swapped non folding mirrors in my E39 for the MTech folding mirrors new from the dealer including new driver and passenger door modules. I even did the aspheric, heated glass for them.

It was only ab $1500. But of course, it was also nearly 15 yrs ago!

As for the E53's mirrors, I'd say forget ab it. They're not a completely different look like the MTech in the E39. They look exactly the same. I mean, sure, function is great and everything, but if there's no change in form, function better rise to a fully new level.

E53 folding mirrors just aren't the coolest thing the chassis can offer.

FWIW, the folding mirrors have > 150k miles in my old 3.0 2004 (sold to my neighbor). They worked great. The folding mirrors in my '04 4.8is- we're *just* flirting with 115k- work great as well. Now the bigger question: Do I use them?

Yeah. I use them. But if I didn't have them, I would either use better judgement (ie park in a better spot) or I would manually fold 'em.

In fact, I don't think my mother in law's '01 3.0 has them. We've had it since new and it's also at ~115k. I have not ever. Like never, not ever. Either found the need nor the desire to fold them in.

So feel better. If you're going to fail at something, failing at being the proverbial fool who was parted with his money is an especially fortunate choice.

Well, nothing like bringing up a year old thread. I found these mirrors while searching around the interwebz and thought well for the money, I'll give them a shot. Only $420 for a set of new aftermarket X5 mirrors with memory, heated, puddle lamps and power folding complete with mirrors and smooth black (paint to match) covers. The rest of the mirrors are gloss black like the sport option on my X5 already. I am going to not paint the backs yet as I want to make sure these actually are up to my OCD standard of fit, finish and operation. They don't look too bad on a black car. We will see how they work...

Keeping fingers crossed.

The PF mirror is a godsend, especially when living in dense areas and driving next to a double parked semi

Well, they're in and initial testing is solid. They fold properly, adjustment is correct up/down/left/right on both sides, and reverse dip is functioning. I'm not sure on the puddle lamps yet, I need to get it all back together. I'm not even sure how they operate, I never had them before. I was prewired for the puddle lamps and EC antidazzle mirrors and I plugged them in. These do not have the EC anti-dazzle mirrors so those 2 wires are not in the harness. (I didn't have that option installed either on my old X5 mirrors). So far so good...

Congratz on finding a good set !

The e70 has the folding mirrors but beyond folding them once and saying "isn't that cool !" I never touched them again

Nothing to fold them for where Im at. I wish they were heated which I found odd. As loaded as the car is to have the folding but not heated mirrors seems weird.

The e53 has heated but not folding mirrors.
