Unfortunately no, air con on and off didn’t make a difference for me, one run up hill with no air con, started at 82c, got up to 102 at top. With air con on, started at 86, and got up to 105. I maintained 80kmh (50ish mph?!) the whole way up hill on both runs, so I’m guessing the air flow was more than air con fan was able to deliver either way?! Will be interesting to see what happens to temps when I get new fan clutch installed! On my old tow wagon, replacing fan clutch made a massive difference to keeping it cool up same hill! (Especially with 3ton on the back)

Anyhow in desperation, as my shoes were literally getting soft from the insane heat I switched to full AC "just for a minute" and I was shocked beyond words when my engine temp dropped from the red zone to normal in under two minutes.

Clearly the different programming of when the electric fan kicked on was a much lower temp and it worked perfectly. From then on no matter what temp outside (down to maybe 30/40F, I always use AC when in traffic to keep the engine temp down (ironic I know).

I would be very interested to know if running the AC will chill your car going up hills using the electric fan by turning the AC on. (maybe you already tried and know if it works).

My first car didn't have a big motor and was progwmmed to turn off the AC on full throttle. I noticed often on long steep hill climbs it would slowly get warmer until I created the hill and the AC came back on.
Usually the a/c on just turns the aux fan on if a vehicle has it and forces the main fan on too as a low speed if it has it. Which can cool down much better than the on/off based on temp readings most electric fan cars have setup.

I'm surprised the fan would make much difference at 80kph. I would actually look into a problem with a stuck closed tstat. (Not completely closed but maybe crooked/wonky: look at crowz recent post).

The fan shouldn't produce any significant cooling over about 50-60 kph. Think about it: when working the fan might generate 50-60 kph wind when car is moving slowly but the RPM is high (think first gear in slow traffic). At the same RPM but 80 kph, the wine from moving through the air may actually "free wheel" the fan like a pin wheel.

I would definitely look into your tstat not opening completely or other basic cooling system problems like the hidden tstat in the reservoir or the valves for the HVAC etc.

When my tstat is working the engine is 90C plus or minus 2C no matter the ambient temperature or the load as long as I'm not in stop n go traffic

@andrewwynn

what is the maximum temp you reached in stop/go traffic?

On my x5 I've never seen temp over 100c. Doesn't matter if I'm at 6500# towing a trailer in 90°F.

I get caught in Chicago traffic plenty but don't usually have dash command running and the moronic NOTAGAUGE idiot dial doesnt move from noon between about 170 and 210F. It has never been past noon in the nearly 3 years of ownership.

My Camaro used to run hot every time I was in stop n go traffic if ambient temp was above 75-80F until I figured out the trick is turning on the AC.

Well, fitted new fan clutch, and headed up same hill, no backing off all the way up, and max temp was 97c. So that’s a bit of a result! I think as Andrew has suggested, will sort out new expansion tank n thermostat inside it, would be great to have confidence in cooling system!
