M62B46 Fixed the underhood whining/supercharger sound!

Years, thousands of dollars thrown at it and many "experts" have listened, acknowledged and investigated the sound... Nobody ever figured it out, till now.

We've swapped out every part we could think of to stop it but after a while gave up caring because it never became a problem, just an annoyance.

Serpentine belt, idler pully swapped in and bamm, quiet engine. No more "is that thing turboed?"

Hope this helps someone.

How many miles were on the X when the supercharger whine began? Normallly a season tech would disconnect the serpentine belt run the vehicle and inspect for the noise? With it disconnected the sound would not be present and then you could isolate to pulleys. Changing the idler pulleys are the least expensive route that in this case would have taken care of the noise. If it persisted then you would have to look into pulleys on the A/C, Powersteering etc. I had a similar case and changed the pulleys. Since the sound was still present moved to the alternator and whoa-la that was it.

I agree, now that I know what it was, that would have helped save a ton of time and $

It was that way from the day we got it. 2 indy shops, 3 personal friends who work on bimmers, BMW of Seattle and me with a stethoscope and broom handle. At some point I gave up.

Just happy it's gone and selling it will be that much easier.
