Qsilver7,

For the E83 2004 X3 car, I have:
- One full key FOB (full remote capabilities).
- One plastic key as in the photo you posted above.

Since the plastic key is known to break with repeated uses, I want to have a cheap metal key (the $15-$20 type) to be in the same key chain as the plastic key.

Ah...thanks for the info. I believe that if the two keys are hanging closely on the same key chain...that your plan will work.

We had the same problem, it worked in the door and not in the ignition. It took a few blanks before we were able to make a key that worked both places. That is why I have so many blanks on hand and I did buy tungsten carbide cutter bits. I say we because my son helped with the programming. He is a computer hardware/software tech so he pulled the security box and did the reprogramming for me. He has all the tools including a static protected electronics bench and a supply of conformal coat remover (nasty sh*t), so no scraping.

Follow-up...

- BMW plastic key + Cheap metal key worked!
- As mentioned above, I found a local locksmith that cut the key for me.

PS: search for locksmith that services used car dealers. Very often customers want 2 sets of keys and in order to sell the used car, the dealer often makes a second key to make the sales easier. These locksmith people go to different dealers just to cut and program key.

I bought a blank key on ebay for $5.
The locksmith cut the key for $20.
When using the metal key, I hold the plastic key close to the ignition ring and it worked!

so glad you wrote back about this. I can't believe it's been over a year since I started messing with this stuff! Key cutter is still out in the garage gathering dust now! but I might have to take another shot at it. you know, I also think some of the keys might be tougher to cut than others. For my 2005, the key pattern 'curves' are very very subtle. On my kid's 2003, they are more pronounced.

Something else that is kinda funny to me. On the flip key I made for the 2005, whatever transmitter chip that came with it...which I programmed...well it has several interesting effects. 1. it won't roll up/down the windows automatically when you hold down the button. 2. There's about a 1 second delay from button-press to door unlock. 3. There's a full 5 second delay when you pop the rear hatch from the time you press the button to the time it opens.

I'm curious if you experienced any of the same? I think it'd be pretty easy to reprogram a different brand/iteration of transmitter chip and just pop that one into the flip key (IIRC the process).

The hardest part of the whole process is reinstalling the effing kick-panel and getting the air ducts back in place - which I found to be an absolute (typical BMW plastic) nightmare. I have regular nightmares entitled "BMW Plastic Horror Stories".
