how to fit cooling fan

I would like to know if it is possible to fit an electric cooling fan to my 2002 4.4 E53 instead of the current fitted viscous fan.
I have seen advertised on the Ebay some fans , but they have 4 wires to connect up, and I cannot find the relevant wiring connect info.
Any help appreciated.

Yes, it's possible (really, pretty easy). Why do you want to do that, though? Very few aftermarket electric fans move as much air as the mechanical fans. They also tend to be a lot less reliable.

Hi there,
The later E53 and E70 4.4,4.6 had them fitted to the later M62 and N62 engined X5. I think you will find they are more efficient regarding fuel consumption.

How much time do you have to read?

Basically. Remove the clutch fan, remove the shroud, install new V8 electric fan. Remove auxiliary fan, take the aux fan connection and plug it into the V8 fan. That's the mechanical part. For safety, coding the temp gauge to lower readings is ideal. A thermostat change is debatable. Lots of pros and cons. I'll keep a fan on mine. It's a heavy city traffic SUV. I want the extra cooling. Since A/C is used almost everyday, the auxiliary fans helps.

a better thread to follow, without extra b.s. added

Here's the thread I read and followed, started by bcredliner :
https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...ctric-fan.html

It's a much shorter thread (I never completed reading the other one) that convinced me to do the swap. Though I have a 3.0i, not a V-8, the fan I used is probably OK for your 4.4L, as is the fan that bcredliner used on his.

If you have more to spend, or need a custom application done, then those are out there, too. I just needed to get rid of my broken mech fan, before it completely came apart, and did what I needed to to install it (function over form!) quickly.

All I want to do is remove the viscous (mechanical ) fan and fit the electric cooling fan as fitted to the 2006 4.6 N62 engined cars.
So I remove the viscous fan and shroud, the electric fan fitted to the later X5(E53or E70) is already fitted with engine shroud.
It has electrically 4 wires -thick brown, thick black, thin red and thin yellow - these are fitted into a plug, there is no corresponding connecting plug in my 2002 4.4litre car.
So what i want to know is where do I connect these four wires to in my car??

You need to figure out if it has an integrated fan controller. If it does, this was around the time when BMW went to DME controlled fan controllers, so you need to figure out whether or not the DME can output the correct signal. (Probably not.) Otherwise, you’ll need to bypass it and see the next step.

If there is no fan controller, then you need to install an aftermarket fan controller. Note that you need to find one that’s rated for the power draw and won’t fail constantly. (You’ll be surprised by how expensive fan controllers that don’t suck are.)

My favorite two speed fan conversion Use low speed for A/C and high for cooling. A simple Volvo relay and BMW switch do all the work. No DME or fancy controller is needed.

Yeah - this is simpler. But OP is asking about the N62 fan.

I have used a couple of those junkyard Volvo fans. They move A LOT of air. I was able to drive my turbo 318is on the highway WITHOUT water flow from the pump when my belt went without overheating. Even on side streets the temps were kept in check enough to get me home. I had utilized a shroud around the fan though which helps.
