Ever have doubts on When to Repair/PM
Then somehow the maintenance gods frowned on me for leaving the chassis. Lotsa ~unexpected~ 2018 maintenance and repairs this year. Couple I can remember. Resealed rear pumpkin, abs module, new reman trans, PM TC, and full on overhaul of every susp. piece in the rear, my Ferrari brake job, and I sorta, kinda have new round of headlights. New Window Reg. this week to boot. I guess I'm still committed to the chassis. Shoot. What to do. I got 1 coil going bad and a whole box of coils/plugs looking sad waiting to go into the bay. What's the saying. A penny saved is a penny spent elsewhere. Replace the 1 or go all in. I'm around 150 and while plugs are on the newer side, 28-30 months ago, coils are probably all original except for 2. Maybe 3. Last edited by jsoto; 01-12-2019 at 01:35 PM. |

Factors I consider when deciding where to dig in on that slippery slope are:
- how deep in there is the work. Easy to fix once it breaks? - what happens if it fails at the worst possible time? I've got way too many cars already, but for some, being without their single car would factor in. Is this car used for short trips or road trips? - is it the sort of thing that will cause significantly more problems if the problem exists undetected for a while, e.g., a bad coil causing cat or cylinder problems. All 6 original coils are running just fine on my 2001 3.0i at 186k miles. For me, coils is one of those things that should be easily detected when it fails - by idle roughness and probably a code too. Also really easy to access and replace one at a time if/when needed. However, on my wife's previous minivan, after the 2nd out of six failed, I replaced all of them since I did not want to hassle her with more problems or rely on her to identify the problem. And you got me on the G09??? Are we talking about Gaussian DFT functionals like this: G09 Keywords: DFT Methods Because, sorry, I can't help much with that beyond the obvious stuff that's already on that page. Stuff like this, "Within the Kohn-Sham formulation, Hartree-Fock theory can be regarded as a special case of density functional theory ..." No joke.

g05 typo - more towards the 2020 X5 with the newer Xdrive and newer 8 engine.
The coils for me is just one of those peace of mind PM. I would not have second thoughts on doing all of them if it came up 4 months earlier. Just, eh, a little sore from the recent unexpected R&R |

Woo HOO. I think I've never been so excited for another week another repair. Ha. I believe one of both of the bags has either got a pinhole as while no measurable observation of sagging, the compressor does appear to be kicking in what feels like almost everytime overnight and during outings, when we get back in.
The bags have a lifetime warranty so well see. Happy Dance. It was another week of repairs but looks like this time, I'm not out of pocket |
