We named our X5's tonight...

I usually go for German names for my BMW's. Seems normal if I even name them at all. I had pondered what to name my E53 since buying it and nothing really fit so never got around to it.

Wife nabbed my E53 and I have the E70 now. I still never gave naming them much of a thought till today.

Today the wife wanted me to go fill up her E53 which I haven't driven since we swapped. After driving it up town I was confronted again with how well it drives and how connected it feels vs the E70.

Its just good, light, pure.

After getting home and washing the E70 and staring at it for awhile resting between washing this or that on it I was noticing how techno, non connected it felt.

It felt.... evil, dark and strange.

Then it hit me.

We named the E53 Leia and the E70 Vader. It just fits

I Like it. I don't name my BMW's. Don't want to become too attached when I find there is a major problem... then OUT THE F"IN DOOR YOU GO and it gets replaced... then the viscous cycle begins all over again.

But my Duramax, I named Him Chucky because he's a problem child and the girls Infiniti Q50 is named Martha... BC its an Infiniti...

Don't have a name for my fleet of cars but do have a description of them.

The Lotus (or is it Lotuses for two) is called the Chick Mobiles because when I drove around with either Lotus in my twenty I was always able to pick up chicks.

The PORSCHE is the Dress to impress. When we were house hunting if we drove up in my Ford pickup truck, the realtor/seller didn't go out of their way to greet us or help us but when we drove up in the PORSCHE they were all more than willing to come up to us and ask us about our plan for buying a house.

The G35 is the wanna race car??? Kids in their rice out cars are always revving their engine if I'm stop at a stop light. I would rev the engine, but when the light turns red I would just let them take off with their tire screeching and hope that there's a cop up ahead.

My sister named her SUV Sadie the Mercedes.

My 2002 is Kermit

I haven't really named a car since. I suppose that the X5 has been called The Blue Bomber Bus, but that's bc my daughters soccer team was called.. The Blue Bombers.

My 635Csi was named The Bomber because of the Billy Boat exhaust note. My M6 is named Sechsy but don't have one for the X. I have several other vehicles that go by the 'Piece of Shit' monikers.

Nice on the names. I always name my cars often some mutation of part of the random license plate. Example when we had the plate UKR 504 we called the car Uecker after the infamous Bob Uecker the baseball commentator.

When i got my X5 (paid entirely in cash feom the proceeds of a lawsuit: previous employer never paid overtime but i kept track), the hubs were shot so i made my own.

Playing with the BMW logo in illustrator and trying to make it more symmetrical, I tried to merge the concept of my initials AWR with BMW as and came up with BMWR but flip the R so it looks almost the same upside down (perfect for on the wheel hub).

So i used the Russian "ya" (which means "my" or "I") as the R and it became:

BMWЯ. For the hubs I actually used a backwards B and the right font where the M and W are the same when flipped. That BMWB is identical upside down or right side up.

Wife is Indonesian and most of her life obsessed with dolphins.

Dolphin Indonesian is lumba-lumba

The proper way to do a plural in Indonesian is to say the word twice; cars is "car car". With the Advent of T9 typing and SMS some smart person invented the concept of a plural by adding 2

Now for plural which is just xxx2 for example what in proper
Grammar would be car car now becomes car2

Since the singular of dolphin is lumba-lumba I determined that it would make sense to use Lumba2 so we call the car "Lumba" or "Lumba2" meaning "dolphin"

Good names! Both of them.
I have a 2004 E53 4.4i 200.000km (6 gear ZF auto trans)and I’m very, very happy with “the connected drive” I feel. I thought it was a subjective feeling “my well-being at the wheel”.
I drove a X6 2012 3d M version for 800km and it didn’t feel as well as my E53. Maybe the electric power steering, maybe the non air suspension (mine has only in the rear axle).
So since I did read your story I can relate to it.
I understand that E70 is not an evolution for me.
I don’t named mine but I greet it in german everyday (I did this since I found it very effective (talking with the car) with my Nissan Pathfinder 1998. Cheers

I love the "greet in German" what's the phrase you use?

I'm glad to have the 01 because it gives me a five year window to upgrade and get E53 Model. I need the air rear suspension and sport suspension.

I really want the active sway bar and maybe M62 motor now that I've already done a full chain guide and vanos refurbish solo. I'd sure like to have V8 vs the i6.

Don't get me wrong, I'm actually more happy that I have the six (two of them) because of the crazy simplicty of upkeep but now that I have almost three years experience maintaining the sixes I'm ready for a trade off of more maintenance for more power (as long as at least one is a six still for reliability)
