Anyone See the Runaway X5 in Florida Story?

Was wondering if anyone local had any more information regarding the runaway X5 (pretty sure it was a black E53) that was featured on the ABC evening news. Owner called 911 saying his pedal was stuck down and he couldn't stop the truck. Cops finally had to stop it with stop sticks.

He sounded like a pretty normal guy on the 911 call but looked like a real "winner" when they showed a short clip of him talking to cops. Admittedly it was at a distance.

Again, just wondering if anyone had any more info. BMW said they would assist Florida investigators any way they could but that multiple safe guards are built in and that a "runaway" due to stuck pedal was "implausible."

1:04 in the video is when the spike strips go out

Dashcam video shows dramatic steps to stop runaway BMW | WPEC

All I can say is .... FLORIDA!

Also, towards the end when the car with the dashcam catches up to him (stopped) you can see a bunch of smoke that appears to be at the front of the car. I figure it's either torched brake pads or from his bong.

Finally, I've got to say, looking at the other stories following on the video feed there ... in Florida, the local news is better than any reality show out there. You just can't make that stuff up. They should seriously broadcast that nationwide in prime time.

Im not buying it. I watched the vids and stuff. Between taking it out of drive, downshifting, brakes, etc he could of stopped no matter what. Also unless its floored which it wasn't if that's as fast as it went the brakes would be stronger than the motor.

Fishy.

If you get a chance to hear any of the 911 call...the operator clearly asked him to try the emergency brake...and he refused. He said something like...he didn't want to attempt to stop the car that way...and also said something to the affect that he had been having issues with the brakes.

He also said that he had tried putting it in neutral and it didn't work. (hmmm? ). And I wonder if the officer that was following behind him ever saw the brake lights illuminate...or recorded the possibility on their dash cam? And why did the driver avoid running over the 1st stop strip that was tossed out? (hmmm? )

I do wonder if the driver ever attempted to turn the ignition off? That would be the first thing I'd try to do.

Yeah, something is just not right. Spike strips only flatten the tires but the throttle is still stuck so whoever thought that was a good idea was clueless. Imagine trying to maneuver a car with stuck throttle and 4 flat tires. Lololol

So much crap. My expansion tank broke a month ago and i saw the temp going up. i switched lanes and back the key off 1 position. The truck slowed down safely to a stop with normal braking.
Maybe i'm just overthinking the situation? unless this is a push start e53? or was it an e70?
