You are correct

Considering dealer costs, the software is actually quite cheap. I can program a new key for about $60. It's possible the DMW and EWS need to be realigned but I think that's worst case. I got a reply and the seller seems to think it's worth $1000 - $3000. I tried very hard not to be condescending in my reply and asked to see it this weekend. No response yet.

I'm thinking $3k to $5k. Even used parts for these aren't cheap. Modules and sensors always going out or parts showing wear. Ebay is a goldmine of used X5 parts, panels and trim.
An EWS DME re-alignment is the "Best Case" scenario. You don't need to buy any new part and it can be done without getting your hands dirty. I can realign an EWS module and DME in less than 15 minutes.

Perhaps they threw in a new DME because and didn't realize that you need to get the EWS module align with the DME.

I'm not really sure. It sounds to me like the seller is just throwing parts at it, new battery, alternator and starter, and someone told him the DME likely was't aligned with the EWS. Either way he doesn't seem interested in dealing with it any longer. I'm going to order a key programmer first, get a new key made and see if that solves it. I've asked him twice how many keys he has and he never answered. Communication has been by email only and he waits a long time to reply. It's very weird. Going in with both eyes open. KBB is only $3500 on this rig and I told him I couldn't go over 1k and he said he would accept that but I need to see it first.

Here's an update on the status of this deal. Seller told me he was just sending out feelers but didn't really want to fix it. It's like pulling teeth to get this guy to schedule a viewing or getting any real information out of him. After I find out he would take $1,000 for it he emailed me yesterday that he just ordered a DME ECU that has EWS deleted. So basically a clean DME with factory settings and zero mileage and no EWS serial numbers. This after telling me he didn't want to work on it. So much for my plan of a $50 fix. I think I could have gotten by with making a key for it since I have a programmer and Bentley style fobs on the way for my 4.4i. He said if it works after swapping the DME he would sell it to me for $1500, still a great deal if it's as clean as he says, $1000 if it doesn't run. I see no reason why it shouldn't run if the alignment was the original issue do you?

Depends on what the OP means by don't start. Engine not cranking over, or engine cranking over but not firing.

Let's hypothesize it's a no crank since what information I could get out of him makes it sound like this is the case. According to his emails he's had guys "go through everything" and he's narrowed it down to a DME issue. I won't know anything for sure until he's done screwing around with it because I'm not going to look at it until that point. The known is, It's in a no start situation after battery was drained, replaced, alternator replaced, starter replaced and finally, a DME this week. I'm guessing it will run if he installed everything correctly. I supposed a faulty ignition switch could be the cause or bad or broken ground if it doesn't.

Just a bit of advice I gave a friend of mine.

Never buy a bmw that isn't running.

1. You don't know if the motor is any good.

2. You don't know if the trans is good.

3. You don't know if the rest of the drivetrain etc is good.

4. You don't know if all of 1 thru 3 is an issue or worse.

That said my friend didn't listen to me (he hardly ever does).

He bought a 2005 bmw 528i 2 years ago. Its still sitting in the spot the wrecker left it at 2 years ago. Its supposed to have key issues.

I have been telling him I told you so for 2 years now.

Just something to throw out there.

just be patient there are always good deals around in craigslist, normally the good ones don't last a minute when they are posted..

always buy a bmw that runs, if it's misfiring badly and the seller say it's just ignition coils/spark plug.. don't believe it because it's cheap and easy to replace them.. it probably has more issues than mentioned...

^ Yep. Usually ends up being a head gasket because they overheated it.
