A/C Compressor Seized?
Yesterday, just after starting the car the battery light came on, and the steering got very heavy.
There was also a burning rubber smell and black smoke from the engine bay of my X5 3.0D. When I opened the hood, I saw that the fan belt was not turning, which was causing t6he smoke. When I turned the A/C off, the belt started turning, so I drove home without the A/C. But occasionally, especially when turning, the battery light would come on and the steering got heavy. But this only lasted for a few seconds. I am assuming the A/C compressor has seized. Is this a simple repair. or a major job?

- I assume you have more than 200K miles.
- Find out EXACTLY what brand you have in the car. Look closely and you will see it. - I did the AC Compressor for my 1998 528i and posted it here. This will give you an idea of what is involved. It is not too bad if you follow the procedures. Get new O-rings from dealer... Hi,
Thanks for your reply. The car has 215,000 kms on it (about 135,000 miles). The car is covered by a warranty, so I will be getting a mechanic to do the work. Just wanted to know what is involved. Thanks, JG Last edited by Jughead028; 04-05-2018 at 11:00 PM.

If the compressor died the black death, plan on replacing the evaporator, condenser, drier, expansion valve and the compressor. You can try flushing the system with solvent, but if you don't remove all the debris that came from the compressor when it died, you will just shorten the life of the new compressor.

Just took it to the mechanic. It is not the A/C compressor but the power steering pump.
And of course, that is not covered by the warranty!! Looks like I will be doing it myself.

- PS Pump is much easier to handle than AC Compressor.
- Buy a good used PS Pump on ebay Australia. - This is weird b/c PS Pump should last more than 200K miles!!!

After reading on here that the PS Pump has a filter, I am hoping that that is the issue.
The PS oil has a burnt smell, and when on full lock, the pump stops, causing the belt to stop also. I have started a new thread asking for info on cleaning the filter. Will post on how I go. Cheers, JG
