Fuel pump on the way out?

Hi to all,

I'm quite sure this is the issue but I'm looking for any other ideas you might have.

Whenever I start the car after being stopped for more than 5 minutes, if I turn the key all the way immediately, it will crank a long time (10 to 15 seconds) before firing up.

If I turn the key to on, count to 3 or 5 (not actually counting), it will the fire up right away.

If I turn the key to on, stay there (think of a girlfriend putting doing it then putting her bag on the passenger seat and taking off her coat), it once again takes a long time to crank.

Sometimes, very rarely, if turned on just after being stopped and fully warmed, it will fire up and stall right away.
Turning off the power, and using the 3 to 5 second wait method makes it start and run great (or good but no issue noticeable).

I'm thinking the pump may be a little tired (may be original or not) but mostly that the anti-return valve inside it is not holding the pressure.

What do you think?

I'm thinking of buying a Bosch or Valeo pump to replace it (it seems complicated and/or expensive to get the whole assembly for vehicules with additionnal heater)

Thanks

You should always wait for the gas to pressurize. If it doesn't stay pressurised for 30 minutes the check valve has failed and you want to replace the pump. I would measure the pressure at the rail to verify.

After hours off, I do always wait but when stopped for 10 minutes, the whole point of the non return valve is to allow for immediate startup.

I will of course check the pressure before ordering but was wondering if there were other probable causes for such symptoms.

A properly functioning pump will hold the pressure for 30 minutes. With the nature of how these fail without warning if you determine that the check valve failed, get a new pump just the actual pump, install into the sending unit and keep the old pump wrapped vapor tight in a couple of zip lock bags and store next to the spare tire.

Less likely, but fuel pressure regulator could be at fault as well.

Correct. My math says about 96% less likely but it is possible. I've read at least 20 examples of misdaognosed fpr that turned out to be the fuel pump or jet pump. FPR failure is very very rare approaching mythical levels. That said, that part could fail and leak pressure back to the tank. ..let us know what you find

I'll report back after testing.

The fuel pressure regulator was changed with the fuel filter a few months ago.

Not yet, the PCV and delay in getting the intake manifold gaskets foiled my plans of doing it last week but I plan on testing it this week.
