DSC/ABS/Brake Trifecta with Transmission Failsafe Prog.

I've been chasing the intermittent trifecta issue (usually after about 10 minutes driving) for some months now, and a couple days ago the X5 reported transmission failsafe, won't engage any gears, and I had to have it towed home. Long story short...

ABS/DSC/Brake INPA codes:
#105 - brake pedal switch signal
#115 - pressure sensor signal interference

Also in INPA, the brake pressure peaks to over 200 without any involvement from me. At least once a day, the rear brakes fully lock up and drag so I have to pull over. Here's a video with part of that:
Part 1 of 3
(let me know if you want to see the other 2 parts.

The 2 transmission codes are:
OBD2: P0721 Output Speed Sensor Range/Performance
INPA: transmission: 59 Festbremsdrehzahl ("stall speed")

I've erased all codes but those listed above consistently come back. I'm not sure if the DSC and Transmission issues are related but I have this agonizing feeling they are.

I have more details and experiences I'd be happy to share if anyone is interested.

Also I should point out, earlier today I removed the DSC control module. While I can't say if it fixed the brake drag issue, the transmission issue persists.

I would start with checking the physical brake switch and the wires for that and the pressure sensor.

I attempted to test the pressure sensor according this thread but I have the feeling I'm not doing it right. My DMM isn't showing any current from either end. I haven't had a chance to go back and try it again.

Meanwhile, do you have any advice regarding the transmission failsafe issue? Now, when I put the X5 into gear (R or D) there's a faint whining noise coming from the bell housing. If this is a problem with the tranny itself, why did it suddenly happen after that failsafe issue registered? Also, after clearing the codes, no OBD2 codes have come back. The INPA code persists. Could it be the actual pressure sensor (or I'm told pulse generator) would be the culprit? I'm trying to avoid opening the gear box unless there's more clear indication that's the problem.

most likely a bad ABS unit. i had a trifecta, i wasted money replacing part, finally i went to a junkyard and pulled an abs unit, and had a friend program it to my car. solved it.

@don: OP said transmission also failsafe. When your abs was out did you also have transmission failsafe?

yes i also had the transmission failsafe error. the car won't drive over 40mph. luckly i was able to reset/clear the transmission failsafe error by this process i found on youtube, i can't find the video, but i have the write up at home, i can send you.

the cheap route will be:
1. take out your ABS and find retailers on ebay that will "repair e53 abs module" for about $100+
2. do what i did, go to a junkyard and get a used ABS module (e53, specific to your motor i believe), or buy one on ebay. and have someone with the software flash it to match your car.

video: to code replacement abs module:

Note: you can rule out the wheel sensors, either with a multimeter, or connect a BMW specific OBD scanner to the car, and see the sensor readings while you drive it.

My new scanner reads all the DSC/ABS Components directly. I was amazed to see the brake pressure real time.

If you are going to be working on BMW get the foxwell nt510 I think you can even program the abs module should you need to replace it.

You can use it to activate abs.

Also, I just bought a complete repair manual in PDF for $13 on eBay. Has every wiring diagram etc will help find this and any other problem

You measure VOLTAGE not current on the pressure sensor. you need to measure voltage from the ground wire to the sensor output while the car is in the on position (engine can be on or off)
