yeah the sellers on ebay from Riga always have amazing prices for OE parts
OH and I buy them for my Bimmer (car/suv), not Beemer/Beamer (bike) :p

Ok so I finally got my 2" long, 3.625" (aka 3 & 5/8ths or 92.08mm) I.D. silicone hose from www.siliconehose.com (Flex Technologies) and I installed today.

I noticed on the factory air intake tube there are 3 small raised nipples that I trimmed down to the same diameter as rest of factory air tube OD.
See pics of me pointing to one of three and then I point to the barrier that I push the silicone hose up to and LIGHTLY tighten a hose clamp on. Too much tightening and the factory air tube crumples. I'D LIKE TO FIND SOMETHING THAT CAN ADD INTERNAL STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY AT OPENING OF BENT FACTORY AIR TUBE BEFORE I PUT 2" SILICONE HOSE ON (just to reduce the possibility of tightening the clamp too much and therefore crushing the hose), ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Installing:
I push the 2" silicone hose onto the E70 throttle body and push till the 2" silicone hose on till it bottoms out at the 4 black 10mm TB bolts (just past the shiny metal rim). slide 2 hose clamps on this now.
---The 2" silicone hose I purchased works perfect!
But you can see how tight things are in my pics and how much my hose from the Dinan air box has to bend to accommodate the install of 2" silicone hose.---
then slide the factory air tube and MAF with the Dinan reducer hose onto the Dinan CAI with clamp but do not tighten, and then push the other end of bent factory air tube into the 2" silicone hose.
Now to tighten clamps in this order.
I tighten the clamp on the TB first, then I go to the other end now, on the Dinan CAI box, and I pull the Dinan reducer hose, MAF and bent facort air tubing assembly away from the box (but not off the connector) and watch closely how the bent factory air tube sits flush into the 2" silicone hose, (hose clamp on this still not tightened yet) and once I'm happy that the fitment of the bent factory air tube is perfectly seated in the silicone tube, I tighten the hose clamp on the Dinan CAI box outlet, then lightly clamp the silicone/bent factory air intake connection.

Note that you will have to trim the arc of the plastic black wire/cable holder that sits on bottom right bolt of throttle body, if you want to continue using.

Now to what you want to know.
With my Dinan air box, aftermarket Mapping by a local tuner, using a Pedal box set to the Green dot (linear setting), and after resetting the throttle body upon install, the vehicle is TORQUIE from a Dead stop!
During motion, the TB seemed to be a bit more responsive than just the 4.4 throttle body but nothing crazy.
I did not test with a Dyno what power was and I do not intend to now, as what is the point now since I have no baseline for my exact vehicle

For the price is say do it.

Hallelujah!!

Been waiting to hear how things came together - super glad to find out everything went together and worked

Do you have any concerns that the factory air tube will stay clamped in the silicon hose? I know you said it crumpled if too much clamping force was applied, any concern that it may work loose?

Mine is still bone stock, I'd be curious how the upgrade might affect mine... hmmmm, may be time to start digging for a new (to me) E70 TB!

Great job, excellent pioneering, and thanks for breaking new ground here!

More torque is always a plus on the butt dyno

No concern on the plastic/rubber factory air hose as the silicone goes on tight!
I just put a clamp there for extra measurements and especially with a 2" silicone hose the factory hose actually gets pushed up against the top of electric fan shroud (no damage could occur) so it kinda gets held in place

There is no measurable benefit from a cold air box from a standing start because the maximum amount of air the engine can use is not limited by the intake system volume capability Adding a Dinan air box and then using intake tubing, MAF, or throttle body that is smaller in diameter decreases the benefit of the air box even with a matching tune.

IMO order of priority based on best ROI is low restriction exhaust, transmission software, air box and all matched pieces, and then matching tune. The only well researched and tested tunes based on many thousands of lines of code considered and lots of dyno and real world testing that is currently available for an X5 are from Dinan.

Unfortunately, it is necessary to do many dyno runs to establish a baseline and more to verify the improvement. Even then ambient temp and humidity will vary results. Timed runs will get you in the ball park but there are lots more variables and you can only see where improved or loss of performance was in the dyno HP/TQ curves. Because the X5 is so heavy and with 4 wheel drive it won't break loose even with the addition of 100 more on the torque side, I have focused on the best possible TQ curve rather than best possible HP ramp.

While throwing some rain on this parade, new and lower cost performance improvement ideas usually come from DIYers. And it is possible that the complete Dinan system is overkill. They are always conservative.

I used a 2" silicone hose but I'd hugely recommend only using a 1" silicone hose but you can see how tight things are in my pics and how much my hose from the Dinan air box has to bend to accomodate the install of silicone hose. Would have to be bent less of a 1" hose only was used.

bcred... (first off, I'm NOT disputing your knowledge, but asking if you know if there are two potential Dinan CAI kits to buy?) when I bought the Dinan CAI, it came with the rubber boot to connect the CAI box to my MAF. the ruber boot was NOT the same diameter on both ends, hence its a reducer, but why would Dinan sell the rubber boot reducer with the CAI box IF in theory it is supposed to connect to a Dinan MAF, which I'm told has a larger body/connection diameter than the non-Dinan MAF's.
Is there a different rubber boot I can buy that fits both the Dinan CAI box outlet and a Dinan MAF and then since the Dinan MAF has a larger body on the other end too, there must be a larger diameter tube that connects from the Dinan sized MAF to the Dinan TB, No?

just trying to find out why the CAI came with a reducing boot instead of a boot that would have been too large, on one end, for the non-Dinan MAF on a 4.4i.... any help/discussion is appreciated/welcomed, please.

I don't have the 05 catalog. My input is based on the 2002 catalog. At that time there was only one cold air system that was for both the 4.4 and 4.6.

I am about to do some spring cleaning and more engine mods. I just took the engine covers off so I took some pictures for you. It shows where there are sleeves and direct connections to the Dinan airbox, MAF and throttle body.

If you don't have the tubing you need you may be able to find flexible turbo tubing at Summit Racing or Jegs that will work. The key is as much of a smooth flow from the airbox to the throttle body. Dinan does extensive research and testing before introducing products. I'm sure the taper from airbox to the MAF is not a negative. I would not try to improve upon their stock design.

Thank you thank you!!! That's exactly the photos Ive wanted.

Your TB is mounted 90 deg different than on the N62 engine I notice. And you have an extra wire/probe to air hose, after the MAF...

No, I am not trying to improve Dinan, just trying to substitute an e70 TB in instead of the expensive and rare E53 Dinan TB and then trying to see if all other non-Dinan air tubing/MAF can be upgraded.
It's me being cheap honestly without being dangerous and all is 100% reversible

The connection at the bottom of the tube is the nozzle for meth injection.
