Let's drive to Maine and back!6k miles part...4(?)

I picked up my E53 after the semi-annual inspection last week. This time it was engine mounts (shaking at idle when all the usual suspects were clear), a diff leak, and a proactive drivers window regulator replacement. We all know how those regulators are. We try and try to keep them going for as long as possible.. and then BOOM. In the rain, at the ATM. Anyway, a few clunks, nods, nudges, and a further developed rattle, I was ready. I didn't want mine blown while on the road, so I just wanted it done.

I also mounted the 9.5" square Style 87's I bought last year. I thought maybe the 285's in the rear would help for mileage as would the Goodyear all seasons that were on sale this Spring. They look HAWT. And I am surprised at a number of things I'll talk ab in another thread.

This time we end up in Maine at our next National Park: Acadia.

After whipping it up on The Tail of the Dragon yesterday- No killboy folks there this time. We hit a small town and readied for today.

We started out a little too early on the Blue Ridge Parkway today.
That's ab as close to a WTF as we've gotten so far...
I've had GREAT fun with the Android radio this week! Well, when my WiFi hotspot is working, it's been great.
  • Waze is loaded and running as my navigation, police, and automatic alternate route finder. I am streaming music that I want to hear and some that my daughter chooses. When Waze wants to tell me ab police, it pipes right in over the music. So freakin cool.
  • After a stop by the Zentrum (yes, boys.. AGAIN!), Waze directed me around a traffic snarl that I didn't even know was happening. It shaved at least 45 mins off the last leg of the day.
  • I loaded Roadtrippers on my radio as well. It's not *quite* as useful as Waze for navigation, but it does serve to remind you where you wanted to go and how to get there on a single device. The two apps *should* be one.
  • It's been pretty mild for temps this week. I am waiting for the time that its so hot the radio locks up as I understand this is pretty common. Or maybe it was. Anyway, except for a screen glitch when I wanted to use Waze to report an officer location, it's worked as expected.
  • HOURS of streaming music right from the radio and connected to my WiFi HotSpot. It's just great so far.
Pics of the Zentrum- and probably not much else tomorrow. Nope! Today! We're on the hunt for Wake Forrest University, Duke, and UNC. I don't know *why* but I expect gift shop visits at all.
Kitty Hawk on Wednesday. Or Maybe Thursday. Best part ab a road trip!

Looks like Kitty Hawk will be tomorrow.

Today, we took only a couple pics, but they had like ZERO to do with the X5. Of the campuses my 8th grader and I visited, we like Wake Forrest the best. Nice vibe. What that means for her in like 5 YEARS? Who knows? But we were as close as we've ever been, so we might as well stop in.

We walked the campuses and bought collegiate wear at each. I found myself unworried about the over priced jackets and tee shirts as I reflected to my own youth. College logo wear was SO COOL when I was in middle school. What little I had I got from my brother's frat parties. Most of THAT wasn't allowed at my school. Offering my own child an experience I didn't often get is pretty much like 92% of what I am here to do. So do did I.

Anyway, we cleared the 1st thousand miles today. The roadtrip logistics are coming together. We had good wifi all day today, but I expect that to change on the NC outer banks tomorrow.

Today I experimented with adding stops in Waze. This is still not 'Space Odyssey' awesome, but it is still really cool. Also, I have taken to following the advice of Waze over and above my trusty Garmin. We've been through a lot, but dammit, Garmin. Have you SEEN that ass on Waze?

Experimenting further with the IBus App and USB connection, I can offer that the experience is, well, quirky.

I have told IBus to lock my doors at a certain speed. Also, I'd like them unlocked when I put the car in Park or raise the emergency brake.

The experience? I'll start driving off, doors unlocked after everybody's in the car. The doors lock nearly immediately. And then, while doing nothing but driving, they just decide to unlock. Then, as my speed increases, they lock again. This gets really fun when I am accelerating away from a stop. The last two steps, an unlock and a lock can happen in direct sequence. This leaves a 14 year old child to look at you like your car is possessed.

She's right.

More on the trip- with what I hope is a cool pic or 2- in the days to come.

I love these threads. Keep it coming prop. Smart move avoiding that particular sword of Damocles by changing the noisy regulator. Always happens at the worst time... last for me was on a road trip in a valet parking stand.

Can't wait until my kids are of proper road-trippin' age.

Sounds like you all are having a blast !

Guess I made the right decision not letting the ibus app program anything

All of my stuff is set thru normal programming.

I enjoy your RT threads! Have fun, be careful, watch out for the ubiquitous and insidious texters out there on the roads.

No Whammies!

Actuators *did* fail on my 3.0 after only a few years. I've always been very light on the touch since that 1st one. But you are right. It's probably time to replace it. 14 years and (now) 119k. We're 1,600 miles in so far and we're still not yet north of the Mason-Dixon.

We stopped in to visit two college campuses, Wake Forrest and UNC. We both really liked Wake, so she has a goal. Of course, where else but UNC will they have size 18 Air Jordans for sale right off the shelf?

We headed away from the thriving metropolis (so nnnnNot) of Elizabeth City, NC for a southern jaunt to Kitty Hawk and the Wright Brother's Memorial. It was a short, scenic ride filled with roadside fruit stands that also sold ice cream.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore offered our path to Kitty Hawk and the other parts of our day.
Kitty Hawk was nice and something I'd always wanted to see. An interesting thing I found was that it was very similar in layout to the Shanksville, PA 9/11 Flight 93 memorial. Both provide a lookout over the flight path of the aircraft from some distance and elevation. They both provide a really cool idea of the scale and scope of the events they are meant to memorialize. Even if the nature of both are very different, the setting is very similar. I wondered to myself if that's a tribute to the fact that they're both centered on aviation.

We heard from one of the Ranger's narratives that the astronauts from Apollo 11 carried pieces of the original Wright aircraft. This was meant as a tribute to the accomplishments of the Wright Brothers. Space flight might not have ever happened without what the brothers accomplished. The similarities in the two memorials' layout made me wonder if yet another unforeseen outcome of flight was not made in tandem at the Shanksville memorial. While the memorial at Shanskville highlights a terrible course of events, it is meant as an over all tribute to the heros of the day. While the emotion from one to the other is very different, both memorials allowed us the perspective to appreciate the heros from each.
Another visit down the road offered a bucket list item: A lighthouse tour. I had been in one on the West coast (Oregon?) nearly 40 years ago, but I was certain my daughter never had been. She was nervous about 'haunted lighthouses'. But, we were so close that I wasn't about to let the opportunity go.
I do like a cool pic of the perspective. I have another later from the same day.
Another bucket list item for me was the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. Ever since I saw it on a Modern Marvels or some show or another, I have wanted to drive it. And, like Blue Ridge, Tail of the Dragon, Cherraholla, or any of the other more well-known drives, I wanted to take it in my own BMW. This trip was that chance!

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel is what it sounds like it is. A mix of bridges and interconnected tunnels that take you both over and under the water along its span. I'll confess that once you're on it, each section is really just a section. It looks like a pretty normal bridge and the tunnel looks little different from the Holland Tunnel into NYC which we drove last year. But if you let yourself be amazed at the sheer length of the span and the diversity of multiple bridges and tunnels brought together across this span, it's still pretty cool. Totally worth the hour and a half diversion.

I have a confession: I actually hate bridges. They make me nervous as sh!t. But I put all that aside to drive what I wanted to see.

So you 'make it' across the bridge and then it's time for a tunnel.
And that cool perspective pic. I confess as well that this pic is a LOT cooler on a phone where it fills the screen.
We stayed that night with an old friend who now lives Norfolk. We brought fresh caught tuna, scallops, and all manner of fresh fruit and veggies. It was great fun and just the kind of thing that makes a road trip worth the time.

In the days since, we've visited Jamestown, some family in Richmond where we'll stay tonight, the White House, and another friend in Fredericksburg, VA. We'll return to DC tomorrow where we'll ready for tours on Monday and Tuesday.

And then comes Wednesday when we reunite with Momma who is flying into Baltimore. From there, a short ride to Philadelphia for a couple days before we head north to New England.

More to come!
