You will almost have to fix stuff right off the bat. I've had to replace battery, tires, coils, valve cover gaskets, tranny service, spark plugs and a bunch of other random things. I will eventually do timing chain, tranny rebuild and t case if I decided to keep it. hint hint I know someone selling one....

Issues
M62 timing chain guides

N62 Valve stems

Pick your poison, I'd rather deal with a M62 personally.

Both can and will have tranny issues.

00-03 can also have issues with the transfer case. Don't think 04+ had the same problem.

Yes, the 4.4 was used in LR and other parts as well big difference is the Brits sucks at electronics.

What I will say is the thing is a BLAST to drive. As much as it will piss me off sometimes the torque is fn addicting. I knew going into X ownership it would be a labor of love or deep pockets. I think as you are prepared to tackle the big issues, either DIY or paying ALOT, I'd look for something else.
Toyota Sequoia would be my choice, you can get it with a V8. The only thing to look out for is to make sure the lower ball joints have been replaced with Toyota ball joints. Not some cheap fleabay crap or Amazon crap.

Like I said, and I know its not a great sample size, my brother bought a 2006 sequoia. He has spent over 5k on the ac. replacing just about every part possible. during this time he drove it without ac for over a year. I know he has spent more on other stuff, I have only specific stuff on the ac. I have another friend who had an axle fall off. Not sure the year and specific thing that broke, just that he was driving down the road and then he was sliding.

Even before I posted, I knew the purchase of these cars would be potentially an issue. Any idiot should be able to figure that the moment you go to buy a used one. First question should be, Why is this only $5k. 12 years ago it sold for $75k.

I would think none of you, even the most enthusiastic, bought an x5 to fix all the things that brake. Enhance or update maybe, not throw money at it. All of us are aware that these vehicles require time and money in the costliest of ways. Knowledge is key. I bet we could look at each vehicle talked about in this forum. Those purchased with perect maintainance, perfect condition, nothing wrong and had some huge issue or many issues. I also bet some will read purchased with no records and in fair to poor shape and ran like a top. My search is for the insight to stay in the middle. I wont be getting the $16k 4.8 with all the options, low mileage and a parts/maintenance list 10 pages long OR the POS without history.
What I want is a v8, hopefully with enough recent maintenance history to prove some of the know issues have been handled. I want enough knowledge to be able to ask and look for those issues. Maybe use them to bargain. Then like all of you, I will enjoy it for as long as I can until i choose otherwise or the cost of ownership exceeds my abilities. Doing the work and figuring the issues, for the most part, wont matter. I enjoy fixing stuff and tweeking. It will not be a daily driver. I don't currently have a car and do just fine. I have a take home vehicle and my wifes car.

Am I crazy if I buy an x5 v8 with high mileage?

I think you have the exact mindset for used X5 ownership. I tell everybody about my takes on owning a PAIR of X5.

Quite simply: "absolutely a joy to own and maintain and that DIY is the primary requirement" with a couple examples typically such as the most recent $1100-1500 dealer quote to replace the brake lines that cost me $37 in parts and $85 in tools to DIY.

A year ago I'd have shied away from the V8 but after replacing valves on an M62 and also doing timing chain and vanos repair they don't scare me at all anymore. I'm excited about the prospect of trading one of our X5 in for a V8.

When I had my Z28 Camaro, I used to steal the line from the veggie drink and tell other people "you should've had a V8"

I think as long as you understand these are awesome but fickle machines you'll be fine. Things break and why BMW used so much damn plastic in the engine is beyond me. If you find that an estroil 4.6is is what you're looking for I know of one!

Mine has been good. Only left at the side of road once. Soon after I bought it and the water pump went. Replaced it and all hoses, coolant tank. The coolant system overhaul is a typical PM item people do around 100k. I did the timing chain around 125k to ensure it wouldn't fail. I've had the typical door handle carrier and window regulator failures. I am planning on rebuilding my suspension since I can feel/hear that it's time.
Nothing is out of the ordinary for a 15 year old car with 175k miles that's my daily driver.
My wife keeps asking me why I don't get something newer, but I always just smile and say "No". Some things you just understand or you don't.
