'06 4.4i lost power on drive home, wouldn't restart until it sat for a couple hours

It's been running great for along time. On the way home a couple nights ago, I suddenly lost power. Pulled over, engine running really rough. Shut down and would only crank and kick over sporadically. Towed it home and after it was unhooked, started it up and it sounded like normal. Today I started it up, it ran fine for a couple minutes, then went back to running really rough. Same story, shot down and would not restart. Pulled the MAF connection and seemed to kick over even less, so put it back. Pulled and re-seated the fuel relay, verified that it is clicking on when key is turned. No set or pending codes, so not sure where to start testing. I expect that once it's sat for another hour, it's start right up and run for a few minutes again.

How much fuel in the tank? Sounds like the leaking siphon jet issue if by chance you have 1/4 tank?

If so, add a couple gallons of gas; if problems depart my thread on how to fix the design flaw in the o-ring on the siphon jet

Interesting. It so happens that there is 1/8th tank. I'll add a few gallons and see what happens.

Test 6 showed left sensor 0.0 liter and right sensor 12.6 liter. Put 5 gallons into it and not it shows 2.5 and 21 or so - I didn't write it down. Stgarted rough again and only ran for a second. Tried twice and the battery was too low so now recharging.

It sounds like you have right and left backwards. The right tank can only hold 5L until left tank has 27L or so.

Siphon failure will exhibit as right tank dropping below 5L (indicated of about 2L) before left tank is zero.

If for example the right tank shows 0L and there is 10-20L in the left tank nearly certain failure of the siphon o-ring

Ok, I must be reading the values for test 6 wrong. The reference I looked at says 6.1 Fuel level averaged / left half sensor input / right half sensor input.

My first reading before putting in gas was 12.6 / 0 / 12.6. After adding 18 liters (5 gallons) the readings are 28.0 / 2.6 / 30.6. Seems like the last reading is averaged fuel level.

Regardless, the car still doesn't want to start. It fires like it's going to start and dies immediately, which is a little different from before I added gas where it would keep turning over and not catch. Still seems fuel related.

Using test six watch the readout.

Let the pump finish priming before you start the car.

It should show something like:

230015 meaning 23.0 left 1.5L right

The right number should stay the same until the left number is zero.

If the right drops below 1L while their is gas on the left side you almost certainly have an o-ring leak.

The o-ring will come out of the groove due to a design defect. Both my e53 had the exact problem I'm quite sure that most will also have the same problem. Search for my siphon jet DIY fix thread. I'll be willing to bet a box of donuts this is your problem. How many miles on your truck ?

Make sure you are getting fuel. The fuel pump makes a definite whirr for about six seconds at key on. Wait until the whirr stops. If you don't hear the pump investigate. Lift up the back seat if necessary to hear the sound.

Yeah, no pump sound. Starting the diagnostics for that now. Fuel relay clicks at key on, but still going to check it. Will jump pins to see if pump turns.

The display looks like this:

TNK: 29.3/ 1.0/30.4L

Back seat off, no pump sounds at all.
