Sacrilege: Staggered to non-staggered?

Oh here's another very interesting thing:

The section width has no standard ratio to tread width.

When I swapped the useless 235s to 255s on my wife's car and it suddenly could take corners I took out a giant caliper and did some measurements.

The 255 put 235 onto the ground 92%
The 235 put 190 onto the ground 81%!

That also means that going from 235 to 255 which should be an 8.5% gain was actually 24% more tread on the ground! I was much less surprised by the performance gain after the math.

You might find the difference is not so pronounced when you consider the dynamic situation (rather than the static). The dynamic contact patch width of a narrow tyre is likely to a greater proportion on the static tread width than that of a wider (lower profile) tyre.

Also, the narrower the tyre the more rounded the tread shoulder tends to be. I guess this is because a narrower tyre is subjected to greater lateral forces (as they tend to be higher profile) at the shoulder. A 315/40 is almost square at the shoulder while a 155/70 is getting close to a wheelbarrow tyre!

But your butt-accelerometer tells the story - the slightly wider tyre makes a big difference to cornering stability.

Tyre science is a whole different thing, eh?

The great thing about the strange mix of metric and imperial,
is that tyre sizes are now pretty much universal-
you can buy tires from anywhere in the world,
there's no converting, etc

it's all the same standard...

I bought my 4.6is without the 20"s but on BMW 18"s that the seem to have sold with all x5s as the "winter" wheels (mandatory in switzerland to run winter tires in winter) and I never even bothered looking for the 20"s, I'm quite happy with the price of tires and the comfort they provide.

At first I considered adding spacers in the rear to fill up the arches but I didn't bother yet and its perfectly stable and holds nicely in the corners (living by the alps there are a lot).

Do you recall which style? I was under the impression 18" don't fit the bigger brakes, but I guess the offset was compensated?

I check the tire size tomorrow if you want.

Reviving an old thread here:

I have the standard 19" staggered setup on my 2004 4.4. The rear 285/45r19 have become impossible to to find. The tire life on the staggered rears is also poor, 20,000 miles at best. The front 255/50r19 are still readily available.

1. Has anyone run a 255/50r19 square setup, on all 4 rims? Was there any problem fitting the 255/50r19 to the rear 10" rims, compared to the front 9"?

2. Alternatively, I have a spare set of rims in the same size and style. I'm thinking of using the 9" rims with 255/50r19 on both front and rear. Has anyone done this? Or has thought about it?

Pic for reference.

The recommended wheel width for 255/50R19 is 7-9". So fitting it on 10" wheel is not advisable and also looks stretched.

For several years I've used a square set with 255/50R19 and 9x19" wheels. No problems.

I have been running 255/50-19 all around on my e53 for a number of years. Works absolutely fine. Last time around I found some Michelins with Porsche N0 spec for the rear 10" wheels, they have wider thread than the regular spec. This comes closer to the 285/45 look.
