So I am going to buy the Grom BMWTU3 with the BTD Bluetooth module. Or do I need the behind-the-radio version? (BMWSU3?) I read through your thread but didn't see any info on the correct part number.
This may be 'Captain Obvious' but I would just ask/talk to the good folks at GROM. I've purchased 2 of their BT adapters and each time I told them the year/make/model and what I was trying to do, and they educated me on their options. Both have worked fine.

One TINY complaint is that when, (in my '01 740iL), I have my iPhone connected, all I get is "GROM" on the display of my widescreen display AND you can't turn off the display (I like to turn it off during night driving) as the GROM pops it back on. And if you want to adjust your tone or anything, you have to be quick as the GROM will quickly revert back to the "GROM" display.

Good luck,
