Drivers window won't go down, replaced switch, no change

Hey everyone,

Got in the X5 other day and the drivers side window would not go down.

The other windows work fine using the drivers control panel, as well as the controls for the mirrors. irst thing I did was check fuses, all good.

Looked online and saw main window switch is common problem, I installed a new one, didn't change anything.

When I push the up button, the drivers window is already all the way up but it makes a small little thump noise, I believe that is the relay? The other windows do the same thing. When I click the down button nothing happens at all.

I pulled codes from that module and it says "Relay for power windows motor, drivers door, does not pick up" will provide a picture. Any idea what that means?

Can someone point me in the direction I should start? I do not know how this car is setup, is there relays in the door for the power windows, or just one main relay for all windows?

The next thing I was thinking was motor is no good but they aren't cheap so don't want to get a regulator with motor and waste money.

Any help appreciated trying to figure out what to do next.

Thanks

Thanks for reply, do you know if there is a way to test if the motor is getting power? I can yank door panel off and see if the motor is getting power etc but I am not sure how it's setup and if I am able to test if there is power at the motor.

- I am not a "part thrower" to fix the problems but...

- Given that your X5 is 2001 model and is 17-18 years old and that the window regulator is notorious for failure, it is not a bad idea to:

1. Fix the plastic clips ($2/each), search for the DIY I wrote a while back.

2. New regulator incl. motor, search for brand recommendation: BMW vs Dorman vs VDO etc.

While on the same topic, you may as well replace the plastic clips for 3 remaining window glass.

Thanks for your reply, I messed with the car a bit earlier today here is what I found.

I removed door panel because before ordering a regulator I wanted to test power at the motor. The connector going to the motor has two wires - I believe one wire is for up and one wire is for down. With a multimeter hooked up when I hit the up button it gets 12 volts. When I move the multimeter to the other side of the connector and hit down button, it registers nothing.

Also the scanner I have I went into the module and read the real time data. It lists all the windows and they say "off" when I click down on the passenger side switch it says "down" when I hit up, it says "up" and the window works fine. On the drivers side which is what I am having problems with it does exactly the same thing, but the window does not move down. So the module is sending a signal to go down but it's not happening.

I am not familiar with BMW I was not able to locate the relay for the power windows. I looked everywhere and found relay and fuse layouts online nothing listed for power windows that I could find.

If anyone can let me know if both wires that go to the connector that connects to the motor inside door are both supposed to have power (one for up, one for down) that would be helpful to know.

Bottom line is it's getting power to the motor for the up function, However the down is not getting power at that connector. The module itself thinks it is sending power to the motor and says it's going down but the power is not getting there. There is also that code in the module "Relay for power windows motor, drivers door, does not pick up"

That's all the information I could figure out I am hoping someone who knows these cars can help me diagnose.

Thanks so much for the replies and help guys, this is starting to drive me a bit crazy lol

Erick

The switch module has a very simple switch design with a double pole double throw relay that switches polarity to the motor. Since you are getting power for up not down there is nearly 100% chance either the relay is shot or a trace is fried on the circuit board. There was a thread this year where somebody had water intrusion corrode a trace on the circuitboard. Try to locate that thread it will show you almost certainly the problem.

Hey Andrew, I was thinking the relay as well but I could not find one, do you mean it's built into the window switch?

I have already replaced the window switch, the entire panel so I thought the chance of two control panels having the exact same problem is not very likely but anything is possible.

I am going to look for that thread now.

Really appreciate your input thanks.

Here's the wiring diagrams for the electric windows....

Looking at the drivers door circuit, there's no relay...

This is the relay or switch. Logically a relay since the driver window can be remotely controlled.

Have you tried to use the auto down function of holding the door key in the unlock position until all the windows roll down ?

As you can see from the diagrams if you have power for up you have power for down. I marked the suspect trace with yellow.

Since BMW would never repair the inside of a module I suspect they simplified the diagram.

Internally there is almost certainly a switch that is probably a single pole double throw switch that hits the double throw relay so you would have the down side of that wiring to look at as well.

If the switch doesn't work but you can roll down the window with the key it's the switch that's broken.

If neither works it's the relay.

In either case swapping the door module from a parts car should fix the problem.
