Went out this morning to check the level, obviously it had sat overnight Started loosening cap and it gurgled out, not like a geyser but definitely with some gusto. Im scared shitless I might have that headgasket issue. (But the vehicle runs so well). Anyhow, does this coolant flowing out when I loosened the expansion tank cap prove one thing or another?

Sorry, I meant the bleed screw near the expansion tank.

please explain the process you used to bleed the system. Or, you could do this https://www.ecstuning.com/b-schwaben...1/Video449-HD/

The process I followed is detailed here in this thread. Basically: 1. Open cap on coolant expansion tank. 2. Turn on ignition 3. Set heating controller to maximum temperature 4. Set fan to low setting. This opens the heating valves and starts the auxiliary water pump. 5. Carry out filling procedure slowly 6. Close vent plug when bubble-free coolant emerges 7. Fill expansion tank until full. 8. Close coolant expansion tank 9. Allow engine to warm up until thermostat opens

Have you checked the coolant for discoloring or milky light brown stuff on the cap or in the coolant? If you wait several hours and then slowly open the bleed screw with the cap in place does it puck coolant or air? Shouldn't be much of either. Did the engine overheat anytime just before the problem or during the time this has been going on? It could be a thermostat stuck closed issue if the engine was overheating. If you have an infrared thermometer check the top and bottom of the radiator, engine and cooling hose temperatures when running at operating temp and about about five minutes after you shut it off to see if there are significant temp variations. A normally functioning cooling system is a critical necessity. Any indication of a leak, checking fluid level and finding it low or overheating should be resolved ASAP. Unaddressed is an invitation for disaster.

This coolant system/bleed process continues to humble me...
I've done the "bleeding" process a few times. Each time, it seems, within a an hour or two of driving, I get the "Check Coolant" light. I let the engine fully cool down, over night, and sometimes when I begin to loosen the expansion tank cap, I hear a "gurgle" while air escapes. (Again, engine is cold). Usually, coolant will ...gurgle over/out when I significantly loosen cap. I slowly loosen until I can finally remove with as little overflow as possible. Sometimes the coolant level is a little low, one time it was too high... Overall, I just try and get it where it should be. Today, when I went out to check the coolant level, there was only a tiny bit of gurgling sound and I easily removed cap. It was a little low, but, I figured I would do the "bleeding process" to try and get it right. (Kept expansion cap off, opened bleed screw, turned ignition to ON, heat on high, fan on low...). THIS TIME, I did not see the coolant level drop immediately as it had virtually every time before. I saw no overflow out bleed screw and no ..."piss" shooting out of the little hole just inside the coolant tank spout. What I did notice was an easily heard noise, coming from what I believe was the drivers side of the engine mid way between front of engine bay and firewall. Seemed to be loudest at the coolant hoses heading back to what I assume is the heater core. I filmed this video/audio with my phone: https://youtu.be/arlkpPqR8KQ I'm guessing my secondary coolant/water pump is dying or dead? I'm also guessing that I should NOT drive the vehicle; planning to tow to my mechanic. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Jay

I've done a lot of research to learn about the Aux Water Pump and am thinking this is my issue. The fact that I used to have solid flow of coolant through the system, constant flow through that little "piss" hole and back down into expansion tank --- which, now that I have this nasty sound AND there is no flow whatsoever...
My only question is, (and I'll sleuth it in more detail tomorrow when I'm underneath it), is that I see in this realoem link that there is a Water Valve located RIGHT where I am hearing the sound loudly; right near the air filter box: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=64_1115 Now, in all honestly, I did not get down on the ground, take off the engine splash guard, and listen down there - where the aux water pump is (right?). So, it may be loud as heck down there and only sounds like it's coming from the valve area. But, just an interesting development I wanted to share to see if it helps anyone diagnose my situation. Thank you, Jay

Does the heater and defroster work normally?

They did before today's development of the noise and lack of coolant flow. I can test in the morning to confirm.
