RWD/2wd conversion on pre-facelift models

I know with a thread title like that, it's bound to get more people posting their opinions/objections/whys, but I am willing to take that risk in search for those who have actual knowledge and experience on this topic.

On the facelift models, most know that it is easy enough to convert to rwd/2wd simply by removing a fuse and such. However, I haven't found much solid info in the threads/posts that I've read on this forum about the pre-facelift cars and converting them to rwd other than the fact that it's not as easy because it's a more mechanically driven awd system than the newer xdrive system on the facelift models.

Although mechanical I thought I read the clutch for the transfer case can be disengaged. I'm curious to know the answer now because I was under the impression that even the older models like I have can have the front wheels power disabled.

I'm not sure how you would manage to convert to rwd. I was under the impression that there was an open differential in the T-case.

In my experience, the front wheels tend to take most of the power on my trifecta effected 5mt, implying that there was an open diff in the transfer case. When the front drive shaft strips out of the T case , power is lost to all 4 wheels. (take Danny's 4.6is for example). I guess you could weld the center diff or swap for a RWD transmission and have a custom drive shaft made up.

I'm not very knowledgeable on the way that the e53 transfer case is designed, just my 2 cents.

You have to ditch the Tcase and extend your drive shaft. It would take some fab work to get the tail housing of the tranny to mate up to a drive shaft though. Look for Williams 6 speed swap on here. It can be done. Granted his is taking a rwd tranny and doing it, but it's possible keeping a stock tranny.
