Three Questions into 1 Post: E53 Door Handle Carrier Weak Point, Name this part, &..

My driver door handle stopped opening the door for me. Every time I pull on the handle nothing happened. Studied up on youtube and found bavauto with a very detailed and well done diy for the carrier replacement.

Started to dissemble the whole thing today (please see pix).

First question is, am I correct in assuming that the small metal that broke off (please see pix) is the stress point for the metal carrier? Does all that force that goes into pulling the handle stress at this specific point?

Is there a fix for this? I cannot find the broke off piece so I'm not even contemplating gluing it back or solder it back. Already purchased a new replacement and will install it later on this week.

Next question: I am in the process of upgrading the front door dsp speaker with a refurbished BAV unit (please see pix).

Out of the 4 contact points on the oem harness, where do I connect the + and - wires from the bav speaker?

Third question, I finally identified this plastic part that fell out of the door when I removed the door card. Do I have it correctly installed? (please see pix)

Much obliged and Happy Motoring!

The door handle carrier breaks exactly there at least 90% of cases. It's repairable almost for free. You need a length of approximately 16ga steel wire.

Find my repair thread on DIY door handle carrier fix.

Yep, you have it correctly installed - it holds the centre of the door card in place. Make sure the metal prongs on the mating parts are opened up so they can lock into the black plastic socket when you put the door card back on.

I think my drivers door is missing this part (lost by a previous owner/mechanic/dealer??), as the centre of the door panel doesn't seem as stable as the other three doors. I haven't had a reason to open it up yet (but it has been off before me), but if I ever do so, I'll buy the clip before going in there.

Right on! By the way, any recommendation on how to wire the bav front speakers?

Door Handle Carrier Permanent Fix*
https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink?sha...8&share_type=t

Hope that link works. Tapatalk not great at links.

In the page I used a nylon zip tie because I was just reenforcing a new DHC. I would (and will) use a piece of 16ga wire when I fix my rear door DHC probably this week.

Usually the wire has some identifying trace one side: like everything is red but one half has a thin black line.

Usually the "different" one is + but you could only be sure by finding a different speaker that is still wired.

You could more than likely determine the polarity by trial and error. With one speaker out of phase the bass will sound terrible.

It will not hurt the speaker to be wired backwards it will just make the sound out of phase with the other speakers (it will be pulling air away while the others are pushing air towards you). Out of phase bass will give me an instant headache so most people can probably hear the difference. Basically whichever polarity gives you more bass is likely the correct polarity.

Thank you for the link, andrewwynn. I did the fix using a metal zip tie, but I didn't cut the little tab off. I figure if the reinforcement is strong enough, the weight-bearing link should stay intact for years to come!

You're correct, and it's more important to reenforce than remove the blocking tab: evidenced by the fact my rear DHC broke without the locking tab issue, just age. It's a design with an Achilles heel that has a weak spot to break
