O.K about the change some of my power Steering hoses so need to know what PS Fluid

o.k. about to change some of my PS hoses and while am at it I want to change my fluid. So the questions what PS Fluid should I use for my 2005 X5 4.4i.

Now on the cap it said ATF only. Some people on the web say use CHF-11S but I don't think that is a ATF oil and I think CHF-11S is used on later models.

And If I am suppose to use ATF what ATF do I use. I know different E53 use different ATF depending on the tranny (been through that when I changed the tranny oil).

Just like the tranny oil I like to get the BMW part number get it from the dealer and get a piece-of-mind knowing I got the right fluid.

I used this one, per FCPEuro.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aut...tec-liqui-moly

Meets the following standards. Best of all, it's got this 'extend-a-pour' extendable tube that comes out of the top of the bottle about 10 inches. Makes it CRAZY easy to pour/fill. I'm probably gonna keep the bottle and wash it out and use it for motor oil on the lawn mower or some other pour and fill project, lol! (assuming I can get it apart to fill it back up ; )

ATF and the CHF Pentosin stuff are both Hydraulic fluid. Use whatever is stated on the PS reservoir cap. You shouldn't be mixing ATF and CHF.

Here's info from the BMW TIS below. It appears one should just simply follow the words written on the lid to the PS reservoir:
Note: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...supply/DsV56Jq

To avoid mix-ups when filling with hydraulic fluid, mark the fluid reservoirs or their caps with identification marks.

  • ATF Automatic transmission fluid
  • CHF Pentosin CHF11S

For Dex3, I have used Castrol. Did not like it. Dumed it for M1. Stocked up on some extra M1 Dex3 when I noticed M1 discontinued it and replaced it with a Multi Vehicle ATF

thanks guys but this does not give me the warm & fussy

Can't mix ATF anf CHF does not give me the warm & fussy.

I though I saw someone posted a BMW spec sheet (maybe not this one here) saying for certain power steering use this fluid and you can use a certain fluid if it is a top off but use this one for a complete fill and use another if it your are in cold temp like norway.

As mentioned above...BMW dealers will use what ever is listed on the lid of the PS reservoir...they stock both and use both as indicated by what the vehicle's reservoir says...or by region (ie the closer you get to the Arctic Circle, the greater the probability you'll have CHF 11 S in your PS reservoir)...or by what was removed or in the system if noticed that it is different from what the label says by a "competent & observant" service worker.

  • ATF (is reddish-pink)
  • CHF 11 S (is green)

BMW part # 81-22-9-400-272

BMW part # 83-29-0-429-576
